It’s true many kids do not exercise discipline and constraint with the use of mobile phones. The smarter the phone type is, the worse the kids get. They can spend hours fiddling with their phones, namely messaging friends, surfing the net, go on facebook or playing games. This leads to bad time management and ultimately neglecting their studies. Only their bad school results will be their wake up call. It’s really exasperating when our kids refuse to heed our advice.
A friend of mine actually bans the use of mobile phone by his daughter once she gets home from school by confiscating the phone. He or his wife returns the phone to their daughter the next morning when she goes to school. To them, the sole purpose of letting the child have a phone is to enable easy communication between parents and child especially when she has to return late from school due to CCAs, extra lessons or project commitments. Of course, they will let her have the privilege of using the phone once she displays constraint and discipline in using the phone.
Parents being the more discerning ones, should really help regulate the use of smart phones by their kids. Ultimately, it is about how you educate and encourage your children to inculcate good values and behaviour and help them do what is right in life. -
Forget about S3 or iPhone 5.
My boy is using my iPhone 3GS. No games…apps are dictionary and CNA.
Mainly for the purpose of contacting him or informing me on days he will be late. -
My boy is using pre-paid card with a old-until-drop-on-floor-noone-will-pick-up phone.
Non-smart phone ie no wifi ability.
Yesterday he "grumbled" he is one of the few in his class with non-smart phone. -

DD classmates all got 'What’s Apps" and started a lot of group chats. DD only one holding hp without smart phone and internet access. She says she feels very outdated when everyone has and she doesnt have. We explained grp smsing can do more harm than good. Any urgent things can call by house phone or normal hp sms. DD says some classmates can smses few hundreds in a day. Shld I subscribe 1 smart phone for her?

My classmates mostly have ' Whatsapp ' and there's a class group, think that is the most common way of communication between teenagers this age nowadays. Even my lab partner asked me, \" You have Whatsapp, right? \".
Since young, my mom disapproves of mobile phones ( she thinks they give a lot of radiation, and can even cause you to get cancer ), last time, I was really quite envious of my classmates who own smart phones ( iPhone, Androids etc. ) but after weighing the pros and cons of them, I found out that I do not need one. ( Of course, whenever I tell my classmates, they'll be like :yikes: . )
Personally, I don't really like group chats as from past experiences, it is usually just spams / things that are not so important ( you'll have people going on and on about their favorite bands / kpop star etc. ). Yes, it's true some people send hundred smses per day - they most likely have a plan which allows them to send free sms.
I don't agree that just because other people have, it is a ' must have ', does your DD have other reasons of wanting to get a smart phone? I can't really answer your question on whether you should get her a smart phone, but if you feel that she's able to take care of it and considering to get her one, go ahead. There are still many pros of smart phones, and one can probably last her a few years.

What’s app is free…but need to have data roam. Otherwise just use SMS. I am not encouraging heavy usage on the mobile phone. As it is, I hear beeps on his mobile quite often.
I do not encourage my boy to be so advanced where mobile/smart phones are concerned…to avoid any problems in school. -
Haneyi:
What you said make lots of sense. All these social media and apps like Whatsapp are usually used to chit chat. This can become an obsession if it is not controlled. Hence, I do not allow my DC to use them. If they need to communicate, just call using home telephone.isetan:

DD says that Grp chats in the what apps have updated info when they communicate. Like school works or even grp project. We agree but try to let her know the negative sides of spending too much time in Smsing. She seems to understand but dun know she can endure this for how long?

My p5 has a whatsapp account. But he uses a separate phone for it and that phone is using the home WiFi to receive whatapp messages. His smartphone that he bring to school is disabled for receiving data even mms and also non data plan and we deleted the games.all with his agreement. His classmates has whatapp chat group which is mainly for chatting and we mute the incoming alarm. If there is any group or important stuff, they will create a separate group from random chatgroup. Those with no access, traditional SMS is still used when they need to communicate. When he just started, the novelty is that he tends to want to check until he realises there are a lot of hi bye and chain letter messages. Now he only checks them end of the day, didn't take much time as he prefers to use that time for games. I think it is a boy thing. My dh is not keen on WA too, but I have a few chat groups with friends, even myPIL
similarly, I uses home WiFi system which will be disabled when I need to cook, revise work, spend time with kids, etc.
