Punggol East By-Election coming ? MP steps down

MMM:
It is not as straightforward as LTK say.ngl2010:
If transportation company de-privatized (anyway the govt is paying for new buses), which means that no need to earn profit, would the current profit earning be enough to cover the increase in the drivers' salary? Anybody can roughly calculate?
Another that LTK mentioned last night (which dh has always been saying to me) is also those gas company. With privatisation, the govt will no longer have control if the private sector wants to increase the charges, etc... maybe these are some of the critical areas that should not be privatise in the first place ?
A part of the profits of these 'privatised' public transport/utitilities/landlord companies go to the Govt via Temasek etc if these remain GLCs. These dividends then become part of the Govt revenue, which is then spent on whatever govt needs to spend money on. It is not as though all these profits go into some black hole.
If there is no more profit, govt revenue will drop accordingly. Then govt will have to look for money somewhere else (like tax!) or have to cut down on govt spending.
Ultimately, yang mao chu zhai yang sheng shang. The real question is not whether 'privatisation' of these public services is good or not. The real question is how to balance the $$$ with the public service.
Of course, other parts of the profit that does not go to Temasek goes somewhere else, like local and foreign investors, and CEO and other executive pay... -
Let the whites clean up joo chiat area first before 2016 GE . Clean swee swee, turns to shade of blue

ngl2010:
If you are referring to Joo Chiat Road, apparently it has been cleaned up so well it is no longer part of Joo Chiat SMC. :rotflmao:pirate:
Wait absorb into the wrong GRC and the whole GRC goes Aljunied how? Joo Chiat can only go Marine Parade, Aljunied or East Coast. :slapshead:
Won't be wrong lah... There should be many checkers... Had Joo Chiat been cleaned up already? I thought it was the main grouse a few years back? -

Also interesting to see some familiar faces here from the last GE.

I am thinking of economies of scale… Why do we have SMC instead of all GRC? Many MPs mean can help each other and admin staff can also be more productive, right?

GRC is uniquely Singapore. Town Councils are developed by public funds, and there is no reason why there can't be economies of scale, whether it is with SMC or GRC. The initiatives of the GRC system, was to take into consideration voting by and for the minority ethnic groups.
Perhaps - perhaps, the initial intention had been a good one. However, it also became a barrier to entry into parliament by oppositions, until the last GE. If this isn't changing, the incumbent may find themselves at a disadvantage come next GE, if more and more qualified people are joining the oppositions rather than them.

Actually, having watched this myself again, and before that the CNA forum in 2011, I noticed how things have changed in Singapore.

Mohd Jufrie Mahmood, then representing SDP mentioned in the Parliament house on that sitting, was ultimately the wiser one! Listen especially to the last part of the video (8:40) when he said how everyone was getting educated in English and would be able to understand one another better, and language would eventually not be a problem. When you watch back the CNA forum with Palmer and the other opposition parties' comments, it's unbelievable. The garmen is still doing things the same old ways, not realizing how our people have evolved. -
