Yes, much to our dismay at that time, as math is his best subject.

Actually, we bought almost all the maths assessments we could find!
Also did past years papers with him.
Particularly good one is Problem-Solving Processes in Mathematics by Fabian Ng.
Alot depends on your child.
Mine was determined to climb back to his original standard!

I have a dd who will be in P5 next year. Very worried as she is the type that needs constant guidance and monitoring. Without it, she just would not be bothered and will spend time reading.

I've bought Fabian Ng book too. That will cover the section C right? How about section A and B? What other books should I look out for.

Is there any working parents who has child like mine? Any work around solution to share?

After reading the posts, I would like to ask: the drop in banding/marks is not due to complex/too many topics taught in T1 in P5, right ? It is all due to more challenging exam format ? How about carelessness ? Tell me, especially for boys...do they become more careful as they grow older ? Everytime I see the marks lost due to carelessness I :stupid:

ERm, I dont think carelessness is only confined to boys though they are often touted to take a longer time to mature in school work.

Carelessness used to irk me too until I realised that you cant always strive for perfection (Nobody is perfect right). Yes, they cost marks- too many at times but I would like the children to take it as another lesson (of course whether they learn or not is another matter altogether ;p)
I think 'nagging' too much about carelessness can turn off children altogether.

Another note I would like to add- in addition to the complex topics in P5, it is vital that the children have solid foundations in fractions and decimals. These topics, with couple of others, form bulk of PSLE questions. So if the children do not have full grasp of the concepts, then struggle in P5 is inevitable.

Section A and B are mostly Knowledge, with more application thrown in these days ;O, questions. Understanding of math concepts is vital.

In addition to topical assessment books (I like 'Step-by-Step series), its also good to practice with school exam papers for each topic.

She is careless. I don’t know how she is going to survive well in 2010. Anyway, we have yet to buy any accessment books because over-piling of work is not the best solution.

I am sure the teachers will recommend some assessment books and we will probably wait till then.

I heard of the assessment books by Fabian something. What is the exact title of this highly recommended Maths assessment book, so that I can be on the look-out during my next trip to Popular?

Step-by-step: I think more for Paper 1.

I started buying Andrew Er's 'Math worksheets' (the really thick one!) only this year. Which remains unfinished and will be used for revision til PSLE

I believe his books are for HA students or at least after the child has some foundation in the topic. Great practice for exam too; definitely not at the beginning stage of learning a new topic (unless, as I had mentioned earlier, its a HA child This is just my opinion after perusing many assessment books.

My ds1 will be in P5 next yr too. I’ve been guiding him in Maths on my own. As the P5 exam format will be more challenging, I am still wondering if I should place him on for tuition.

Can anyone advise if by doing the more challenging Maths questions at home, will that be sufficient ?

'Problem-solving Processes In Mathematics' - usually in 5A, 5B parts. I have old editions so I am not sure if the new editions are any different.

I agree about over-piling of work. Since I have so many old books/ exam papers etc no assessment books except maybe for science and MT.
And it will be a very busy year for them. I dont intend to add any more load than necessary

I like the MA assessment book by Fabian Ng (my personal preference). I have both the P5 & P6 for my DS.


I also tried it out myself, quite challenging.
