Hi,


have a question to ask.

Ruby and Sandy had an equal number of chocolates. Each day, Ruby ate 14 chocolates and Sandy ate 21. When Sandy had 49 chocolates left, Ruby had 112 left.
How many chocolates did each of them have at first?

I solved this question by doing this->

Let the number of days by u.
49 + 21u = 112 + 14u
7u = 63
21u = 63x3 =189

49 + 189 = 238

Each of them have 238 chocolates at first.

But how can I teach a P5 student who has not learnt such method before? Is there another way of solving this question for a P5 student?

Each day, Sandy will consume 7 more than Ruby.

Now Sandy had consumed 112 - 49 = 63 more than Ruby, and that will work out to be 63/7 = 9 days.

So at first, Sandy will have 21 x 9 + 49 = 189 + 49 = 238.

Ruby will have the same number.

Mary takes 5/6 h to rake the leaves. David takes 1/4h less than Mary to rake the leaves. Bala takes 1/6h longer than David. How long does Bala take to rake the leaves?

Each division is 0.2. The pointer points between 2.4 to 2.6 and the answer should be 2.48.

using ratio and equating ratio parts is the usual approach..

shaded --> 2 units
A --> 10 units, A-unshaded --> 8 units
B --> 5 units, B-unshaded --> 3 units
Total area--> 10 units + 3 units = 13 units
Total unshaded area --> 8 units + 3 units = 11 units
Fraction of figure that is unshaded --> 11/13
