Strange indeed

One must really have the heart & interest to serve the people and show the residence how genuine they are. Not when a prob is brought to their attention, arrange grassroots to meet the residence. Thereafter, give excuse they are nit aware of it, is LTA or other dept fault, and after which, let the matter die off. :siam:
Heard about a case of complain during MTP, it was about some trivial night parking matter (to me it's trivial lar har
). No matter what being offered, that big size fellow die die only want his way, only ONE way, no compromise! Ok, grant him? Or not? What about the other party involved in the dispute? How to please both parties? So, at the end you pleased nobody and get none of these two fellows votes
pai dang.......

I donβt think anyone is twisting the governmentβs arm asking for more hand-outs. I feel that the government has just taken a direction that many young people in Singapore donβt agree with. For example, not doing more about our transport woes, turning away refugees who were on the verge of starving to death, threatening to sue people who speak up, etc. These are issues that young people care about. I donβt think money was a huge factor in PE because most of the residents are comfortable financially. This is also clear because they rejected the PAP despite the attractive parenthood package.

That depends on what's one's view about slandering; malign, calumniate and defamation; think the laws has a clear definition about what constitute a defamation. Music to some's ears may just be defaming and damning to others. Until one is in the center of such situation, one could never knew how much irresponsible words can victimize, and damage. -

Then can you, as a WP supporter, please speak up against some of the xenophobic, racist comments being made by some other forumers here. Show us that it's about the higher order issues, not the bread and butter. -

Not so sure, look at Chen Show Mao and Sylvia Lim, they are both talented and full time MPs.
What? You're expecting them to draw one salary for being an MP? How unthinkable! Preposterous! No top talent would want to join politics for sure!Just relax:
I think PAP will pick up lessons including making sure their own MPs are on their toes. It must be difficult being a PAP MP as it is part-time since all the PAP MPs hold full-time jobs many of whom are top professionals who must devote substantial energy to their jobs, yet must make time for MPS and weekend grass-roots functions and meetings and also manage family time.
For somebody like Michael Palmer it would have been worse as he was a lawyer, MP, Speaker and husband/father. Something gave way. In his case without prejudging him it appears that family gave way as he was still performing as a lawyer, was well-liked by constituency and did a good job in Parliament as Speaker earning even praise from LTK.
PAP may have to relook at how it's MPs can function and meet residents' expectations. If you are an MP who already works in NTUC or organisation that has relationship or close contact with heartlanders then your job may help u function better as an MP. But if you are a busy lawyer or doctor I wonder how much time can you really give as an MP? Your work still takes priority as you owe a contractual and moral obligation to do your best for your employer, then does the constituency or family suffer?
Ordinary KSPs already complain so little time for meaningful family time because of work commitments or other reasons, then the MPs who spend weekday night at MPS and weekends at constituency functions and meetings must have it harder. And there are MPs who also take on roles as directors of companies or trustees of charities or volunteer organisations.
So I wonder if all this time pressure results in MP losing touch with the constituency. Is it time to consider full-time MPs? what if full-time MPs receive their salaries direct from S&C charges? They are then directly responsible to residents? Then there is no issue of MP having to be fully committed to an employer. The MP becomes fully committed to the constituency. Then the MP works like any other Singaporean and has family time and can devote 8 hours a day to the MP job and not the current ad-hoc timing and appearance and hours.
Just a thought
If their salary is $15,000 and S&C can be used to cover operating expenses of full-time MP, then why not? If need be increase salary for full time MP to $20,000 which would be a very very comfortable salary for a talented person who wants to serve the people. -
znzyzyzx:
Must look at longer terms. Give so little, go hospital give birth already, the cost might be just enough to cover the cost.
Actually for quite many of them, you give I also dont want ah. (dont want to have babies)
Money must come from somewhere? 300K (heard from somewhere) for one child to study up to university. -
Just relax:
Isn't $15,000 , $20,000 or $25,000 for being a super grassroot leader seems low compared to what ministers (seemingly spending less time directly MTP) draw?

[/quote]A Minister calibre is at least equivalent to the CEO of a fortune 500 company so a salary of s$1 million per year (which frankly is very low) is barely enough. To be fair Ministers should at least get 2-3 million per year.
An MP is equivalent to the CEO of a SME and such CEOs usually earn between 200,000-500,000 per year.
You have to pay fair market value to get capable people who will serve, otherwise you will get mediocre people to step forward. To be a good MP you should at least have the ability of a SME CEO as such a CEO must manage people and lead a small company that will face greater difficulties in terms of financing, managing people, surviving against difficult odds etc. -

But fortunately 500 companies pay salary from their revenue ...
