      SPIES:

      Mine in 1 Humility.

Are kids allowed for the parents briefing? Thinking of skipping it cos no one to help take care of the kids.
they are allowed, I brought DD2 with me when it was for DD1 P1 briefing. Just that, they shouldnt make noise or fidget about, it kinds of disturbs the session.

I dragged myself down though had food poisoning  coz had P1 and P2

trying to gather what I remember and list them here, the rest feel free to add in πŸ˜„

There was the main speech by the Principal

          Road Safety
She spent a great time on road safety and asking parents to have their kids ready when the car stops by the main entrances. PL has 3 gates so they have limited resources for the teachers to stand by for all 3 and need to rotate also. Not to dash across the road even when late and parents not to yell or scold the security guards.

          Change in School Hours
There were feedback from upper primary parents that Monday ends too late so Miss Chua is tweaking the hours so that all the girls have sufficient rest.

For Monday, parents will be receiving a notification soon on the change in hours and P1/P2 will end at 1pm whilst P3 - P6 will end 2.45pm.

There was talk on the theme and everything we do is in love and how parents will work with the school to cultivate values. :boogie:

For P1 and P2, parents had to attend the EL/Maths session first conducted by the respective form teachers in your girl's class then there was a 5 mins break where we went for the MT session briefing. P1 MT session was conducted in the same class while for P2, we had to go different classes based on your girl's MT grouping (this is for chinese).

          Primary 1
The holistic assessments commences 2nd Term onwards and with varied types of checkpoints so parents don't need to fluster too much.

The 1st term is for all the kids to transition to the school smoothly and adapt to the hours.

Form Teacher showcased the Stellar program and how penmanship will change to handwriting. They have books at the back of the class and if that finishes, she has another bag of books to share with the class.

Grammar, writing etc are all tagged to the Big Book which your girl is reading from. For spelling, you will noticed a star beside the list of words which means that is the check point for spelling.

Maths, there is no 3D shapes anymore and P1 2013 will be undertaking the new PSLE syllabus. (kind of explains the change in textbook I guess)

Form TR did share that they do group the girls by higher ability, normal and low BUT the girls will not be told and the parents will not be informed either hence they were explaining that parents should not worry. The reason behind is because they want to address the low ability pupils and bring them up to normal. It is also to identify the LSP students.

LSP will happen from term 2 onwards and will be 1 period. Your child will not lose out and the session is a smaller group and taught at a slower pace.

          Primary 2

EL/Maths - My other half attended this so not given much details.
The main thing is to read and read. They are focusing on writing skills and form teacher was going on how parents shouldnt compare.

The 1st 3 terms are based from Check points and Performance Base Tasks
          Term 1 - 10%
          Term 2 - 10%
          Term 3 - 10%

The 70% is based entirely on SA2
          Term 4 - 70%

          Chinese
Think there are different levels for the chinese and is grouped on ability. It helps the teachers teach at a consistent pace. most of it were mentioned from the slides and they have the sample questions posted.

Pinyin isnt tested but girls are expected to know so it is easier to flip through the dictionary.

P2 onwards , HYPY and bi hua will not be tested.

There will be pinyin in the tests but the girls will need to write the han zi instead. You can refer to the slide deck to see the type of questions for P2

I took an interest to read your reply as my dd2 will be in P1 in 2 years' time. talk about KS πŸ˜†

School hours - my dd1 currently ends at 3.45. To end at 2.45 is indeed great news. There was no mention of this during the upper primary briefing.

Chinese - wanna confirm that pinyin is not tested even in P1? Will the basics of HYPY be taught in P1, or kids r expected to know? I'm a firm believer that learning chinese should start with word recognition instead of HYPY. These days, with e-dictionary, one does not really need to rely on pinyin to search for the word

HYPY is a basic where the girls knows how to use the HYPY dictionary for han zi. and know there are varied words for each pinyin sheng diao.

Ok editing my initial post

It is actually P2 to P3 banding

So the girls will be posted to different classes based on their 2013 entire year results

Ya, Miss Chua was saying she has received the feedback and it was only recently after reviewing the hours which they are making the change. Upper Primary briefing was the week before right? πŸ˜„

HYPY is still tested in P1 through check points hence basics are still taught . πŸ˜„ No change in syllabus, not sure what will happen in 2 years though.

For MS word and MS office, need HYPY... πŸ˜“ coz I am using it πŸ˜‰

From P2 onwards, the focus on Han zi is more and they will use the HYPY to get girls to write the correct char.
