Totally agree that helmets won't help the elder one for sure, but if the younger one had died from impact, it may have given him a small chance. Of course if he too was ran over, then...gulp :sad:

tragic accident at Tampinese. Two brothers cycling home from school were killed by a big heavy vehicle. The photos are shocking. I am not sure if this could have saved them - maybe the younger one - but parents, please MAKE your kids wear helmets if they are cycling along or across roads.

That aside, there are a lot of young riders with very poor road discipline around the area with my parents live. They would race across behind my car even though I am doing a reverse park. :siao:
Road safety awareness is definitely important. Something I really don't get is young kids on scooters zooming way ahead of their parents along busy roads. A big no-no in my books.
Luvmum, yup agreed. Another point that I drilled my kids on - don't bend down close to roads. SIL witnessed an incident where a woman bend over to pick up something just as the bus was approaching. When she bent over, her head stuck out over the curb and the bus just missed her head. SIL said both she and another man broke into cold sweat at the close shave. -

The drivers nowadays are very impatient and drive as if they own the road. Some drivers can actually speed up their vehicle when they see you crossing the zebra crossing. Some will pressure others not to give way to crossing padestrians by honking. Inexperienced drivers might be pressured to step on the accelerator when they should be on the brakes. Perhaps their money not enough are affecting their moods? So please look at the vehicles before crossing even if they have stopped, especially taxis and those with loads of workers.I am affected too after reading news about this and together with the 6 year old william who was found dead in Malaysia. All these news bring cold shivers. No matter how protective we parents want to be, we cannot avoid accidents at all. Nobody can predict what lies ahead, treasure and cherish.
Like my son's school, everyday when I send him to school, i realised no cars stop at the zebra crossing even when we are crossing the road. We literally need to run before any car comes by. Now, we don't tell our kids to wait for the green light before stopping. We tell them make sure the cars really and truly STOP before you cross.

No, definitely not a direct match, I was thinking of impact injury when the cyclists are flung into the air and land head first. One of my friends died that way - flung and landed head first - , but then, she was just a pedestrian, the car had swerved onto the kerb and she died of head injuries soon after. Another friend in the same accident was not flung but thrown sideway onto the windscreen and off. Though other parts of her body were injured, she survived.
Or perhaps it is just my feeble attempt, thinking how the outcome could have been marginally better. Like parents buying bullet proof backpacks for their kids to use as shields. Sigh. -

TNP PHOTO: Jeremy Long Two brothers, aged 13 and 7, were killed in a fatal accident in Tampines at about 5.40pm yesterday afternoon.
The older boy was cycling, with his younger brother riding pillion, across Street 45 towards Dunman Secondary School when they were hit by a cement truck turning into the junction.
One of them was killed on the spot. A witness saw the other boy, who was severely injured, trying to get up before collapsing again. He didn’t move after that.
Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene. The 56-year-old driver was arrested at the scene for causing death by a rash act.

To lose a child is devastating but to lose 2 is double the impact.
My condolence to the family.
At the same time, let's be reminded of road security for children. We need to be careful when driving. At the same time, we need to remind our kids to look left and right when crossing the road. Don't be engross in their phone or conversation. Importantly... don't take zebra/ traffic light crossing for granted. Always be alert and on the lookout. -

cant imagine the distraught state of the kids’ parents upon receiving such tragic news…
Young children riding bicycles on the road is potentially dangerous, esp nowadays the roads are getting so congested…
