      MathIzzzFun:
      Jamesbond:

      Eddie had thrice as many stickers as Angel. Eddie used 2/3 of his stickers and gave 1/4 of the remainder to Angel. Eddie then had 474 stickers left. How many stickers did Angel have at the end?

      Pl help.... :scratchhead:

      At first, Angel --> 4 units
      Eddie --> 12 units

      after Eddie used 2/3, left --> 4 units

      Eddie gave 1/4 (= 1 unit) of remainder to Angel,
      Eddie --> 3 units
      Angel --> 5 units

      3 units --> 474, 1 unit --> 158
      In the end, Angel --> 5 x 158 = 790

      cheers.

      :thankyou:

          Just got this:

          Marie baked 12 brownies of the same size. She gave an equal amount of the brownies to 5 friends. How many brownies did she give each friend?

          Seems easy but doesn’t make sense to divide 12 by 5 and yet the question does not suggest that Marie should be included.

          Anyone?

              Also, how should we approach a problem as such:

              Stephanie and Jolene shared a total of 88 stickers. Stephanie gave half of her stickers to Jolene. Jolene in return gave half of what she had to Stephanie. In the end, Stephanie had 40 more stickers than Jolene. How many stickers did Stephanie have at first?

              Thank you very much.

                Hi

                You may use \"Work backwards\"

                A quick check, the answer is 80 stickers for Stephanie.

                I'll work out the slide tomorrow.

                Best wishes

                  Thank you very much Tianzhu, know what, I am still now struggling with this question & it still eludes me. Am feeling spaced out now. Can’t think anymore. Will look at your slide when it becomes available & try to figure it out. Sigh … learning is no longer fun … poor children …

                  Anyway, am very grateful for the help that I have received thus far.

                  Am totally drained now. Good night Tianzhu, MathIzzzzFun (urm really?) and Jamesbond.

                    Hey Quekcc, thanks. Yes indeed the same save for the names … thank you. Hope Tianzhu sees this then Tianzhu won’t need to take the trouble.

                      Hi Quekcc, the number of bars used as representation is just an assumption to assist in deriving the steps that follow?

                      Tianzhu, please may trouble you to show me how I can work backwards to derive the answer? I tried doing it based on Quekcc’s solution but still cannot see.

                      Thank you very much.

                        you can work backwards .. start from the end...

                        In the end, Stephanie had 40 more stickers than Jolene
                        Jolene --> (88-40)/2 = 24 (*this represents 1/2 of what Jolene had before she gave to Stephanie)
                        Stephanie --> 24 + 40 = 64

                        Before Jolene gave half to Stephanie
                        Jolene --> 24 + 24 = 48
                        Stephanie --> 64 - 24 = 40 (this represents 1/2 of what Stephanie had at first)

                        At first, Stephanie --> 40 + 40 = 80

                        cheers.
