Hi nicnac,Hi parents,
Which is better, the regular class or pure creative writing? How often do they do writing for the regular class? Thanks!
This is based on my experience and a few of my friends:
Regular class- most classes would finish up one compo in 2-3 weeks. They would get the children to write out parts of the compo. The lower primary would take a while longer than the upper primary. For p6, which my girl is in now, they can cover 2 compos in one lesson. They revise one compo (eg accident) and teach a new one (bomb). They may not finish teaching all two compos in one lesson but I find for upper primary, they do cover more compos.
Pure writing- they go into greater detail for the techniques and of course much more writing is covered.
If your child only needs help for writing, then just go for Pure writing. My kids go for regular classes as I find they can be weak in compre as well. -
Hi,
How do TAS teachers teach? After going to other centres, I find that most centres, it depends on the individual teacher. For TAS, i heard they have regular training. And that the teachers are being monitored regularly. Is this to have one way of teaching? -

For their regular classes, they cover grammar, cloze, vocab, synthesis and compre. So inevitable they can't cover so much of compo. End up it will boil down to what the child require.Hi parents,

Ds1 attended a few make up classes in the past but due to his temperament and that he's fairly young. He will usually tell me the teachers all teach the same, no difference. But some may be more finicky and others may be more lax - this is the little I glean when I see the correcting marks on his papers. Sorry a bit hard to explain. but teaching is a very personal thing and I think WHO the teacher is will eventually have impact. At this time, TAS is still unlike some places where SOME teachers are in high demand - but I may have missed out.Hi,

Agree with hquek, in TAS, I do not usually hear of teachers who everyone wants to go for. Every teacher is surely different. But I think because they emphasize that the teachers need to follow a certain way of teaching, it makes it a little more uniformed. At other centres, there are long queues for certain teachers because usually they leave it to the teacher to decide the way they teach. Hence, some teachers are much more in demand.
For TAS, most of the teachers teach using the TAS methods. However, i do know that certain teachers like teacher joy, teacher elaine, teacher martin are popular. Recently there are some new teachers I heard from my friends who seem good as well, teachers like teacher jasmine and teacher esmonde. -
About pure writing class, anyone knows the difference between pure writing and NSA? Which is better for new syllabus?

How’s the pure writing class for p1? How’s the lesson conducted? My ds can read but shown little interest to write. He seems to work better in a group, more willing to try and put effort.

Hmm… How come I can’t find the schedule for paya Lebar branch on their website? Any link to their Facebook?

My limited understanding and conjecture here only.
Pure writing is just on creative writing. full stop. They may have some writing topics based on the new syllabus.
NSA is more where kids are exposed to current events and news papers and they discuss that. I am not sure how much writing will be done or if it's more discussion based.
The english class caters also to the new syllabus - i see my kids compre looking very different these days (for eg, child given an advertisement and told to provide answers by inferring based on an advertisement). If a child is strong in other areas, pure writing/nsa may be suited. but if a child has trouble synthesizing/spelling words, then a regular english class may be best. -
Thank you quirkymum and hquek for sharing your experience… That’s the dilemma. I think my kid is rather weak in compre, careless in grammar but then I also want him to have enough writing practice.
Do the classes, pure writing class and regular class, share the same essay topics?
