All About Getting Help for Students Weak in English

Hey there
I would like to give English tuition lessons to primary school children on a 1 to 1 basis preferably. I am a Sec 4 student (16 years old) from a Band 1 Secodary School in the West side of Singapore. I had a PSLE aggregate of 251 with an A* in English. In secondary school, I have done well in English with a percentile of 90% and above (which means I'm in the top 10% in my level for English, coming in tops for a few major school exams). I have also participated in the Creative Arts Programme which is mainly about creative writing. I have also been a mentor for English creative writing to primary school kids under the Gifted Education Programme when I was in Sec 2.
I'm really hoping to tutor primary school kids because it seems like a good experience for me and I do love the subject. Since I'm not a qualified teacher and I haven't gotten my Olevel results too, I'll charge very low rates! Around $15 per hour. Negotiable

I need advise, called up Creative Horizons and learnt that in order for my son who is in P1 to enrol, he needs to go through an entry test. He has to read the qns himself and answer it. Problem is that he's bad in reading!!
He was with ICR for nearly 3 years and still quite bad, so I need to switch him out to some other centres or 1-1 tuition.
Any recommendation for good tuition teacher or centres in kallang/geylang area?

hello can you please let me have Ms Anne Chin's contact? TIAEnglish is a tough subject to master. My son is in P6 this year. A good friend recommended this lady at the beginning of this year. This tutor is very strict but it's ok to me bcos son needs that discipline (and someone to be afraid of :evil: )
This tutor teaches mainly P6 students...she brings kids on outings to view the titanic display, airport and most recently, a restaurant so as to get students to have a feel in case they are given such a scenery during the orals.
It's amazing and truly incredulous :yikes: that a tutor brings kids out...never have I heard that before. My daughter in P2 wanted to go along. I am confident this lady will help me son get good results for his English...but most importantly, she has boosted his confidence.

Somehow it does not seem to be working out for us at ICR also. Enrolled my K1 boy into ICR and was told that TCS level would better suit him as he is still quite weak and have probs with alphabets.

However I realized from the worksheets he brought back that he has been doing a lot of drawing, art like work. Just puzzled that if my boy cannot be on ICR level due to being weak in alphabets, shouldn't the classes work on his weakness? I.e reinforcing alphabets rather than drawing?
The teachers for that level are also locals with diploma qualifications. Nothing against locals as I am one myself but one of the reasons we pay a premium at ICR is because they use native Aus/UK teachers that have higher qualifications isn't it?
Which course is your child attending now 3blessings? There is a Morris Allen near my home but I like to find out more in case I make the same mistake like ICR, just enrolled but need to withdraw and have to cont classes till the term ends or else the money goes down the drain. Hai... -

Hai...[/quote]After TCS, it will be PRP (preliminary reading programme) before come to the \"final stage\" which is ICR level. My son spent 2 terms in TCS. Lots of drawing and colouring too but I was ensured by the teacher that they did reinforced all consonants sound. Drawing and colouring are to train their penmanship because PRP requires quite substantial amount of writing. Besides these, they did story telling in TCS and PRP too. My understanding is that native teachers only teach PRP level onwards. Discuss with your teacher about your concerns. Good luck! -

After the child read aloud short passages / stories, he'll have to answer qns. This means he'll have to tackle adjectives, nouns, adverbs, grammar, comprehension, because he has to do the worksheets.

even at Nursery level - pre-school children straightaway learn to read and recognise simple nouns. There is no such thing as waste time coloring worksheets - because it is an English lesson, not an Art and Craft coloring lesson.

There'd been feedback from some parents that after spending some term(s) with ICR - their child still can't read properly, nor comprehend what they'd read about. Thus, Comprehension part got problem. So they switched to some other programme.
However, there're also cases where ICR work well on their kids.

Was assured by ICR that they did a lot more than drawing during classes, but if the worksheets brought back after classes are the drawing ones only, how am I able to continue the revisions at home?
Ya, the native teachers only teach a certain level onwards. Morris Allen uses the native teachers from nursery onwards though, price seems comparable also, 44-58 depending whether weekday/end… Decisions…decisions… -
