It depends on your family’s position in the food chain. If you are high up the chain, the good life is yours. And high up the chain now is infinitely higher than before. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but nuanced handling is needed.

There has been a lot of focus on the downsides of the PAP plan. Anyone figure out the downsides of the WP plan should they fail to execute?

There are no perfect plans, it is always about finding a balance, about what to give more. Someone somewhere will have to give up something for someone else in any scenario. The question now is what do we as a society value and want to leave for our children. The current policies will not have too much bearing on us. We are so fortunate, exactly on the crest of the wave.

According to ST reports, in 2011, nearly 3/4 of the marriages between citizens and non-citizens were between a Singaporean man and a woman from another part of Asia. If citizenships are granted to foreign spouses more readily, would that increase such marriages to beyond 40%? Is Singapore ready for the demographic change as a result?

I am not saying this is a good or bad move. Just wondering what are the possible consequences and if people have thought about it.

this is evil thinking;

but seriously I hope younger girls should have more sense to know that they can potentially be knocked up and the consequences of that

and also, to lower the incidences of child abuse - they should also know that the fathers of their children do not make good husbands....or fathers, for that matter.

The effect on demographic change is definitely better than those as a result of 100% foreign families turning citizens.

Can! Once I manage to figure out exactly what their plan involves...

So far all I get is:

(1) White Paper say 6.9m, so WP say 5.9m

(2) White paper say assume x% growth, so WP say x-0.5%

(3) WP say increase local workforce by 1% a year by encouraging old folks and SAHMs to work

(4) Freeze total no. of foreign workers, presumably including EPs (\"We should strive to keep our foreign labour force constant between now and 2020, depending on our success in growing the local labour force. It does not mean that we shut the doors to foreign workers. Instead, new work passes will be issued only to replace expiring work passes or to supplement shortfalls in the local labour force.\" - per NCMP Gerald Giam)

(5) Somehow increase productivity (dunno how yet, though in fairness white paper also never say how)

(6) Somehow get Singaporeans to make more babies (but dunno whether compatible with somehow increase productivity and get more SAHMs and grandparents to work)

(6b) Somehow make more HDB flats for Singaporean couples (but \"Singaporeans must accept a slower pace of construction\" because don't want so many foreign construction workers - per MP Pritam Singh)

(7) Promoting Singaporean friendly immigration policies (this one I actually understand!)

(8) Single parents?
