2013 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

Goodluck8:
Nanyang papers are the toughest among all the top schools' papers, especially Maths. Don't have to panic if your kids can't do them. PSLE papers will not be so tough.happyheart:
Can I know if any of your child has attempted Nanyang Primary 2012 CA1 paper? Can share your experience? I think my DS has trouble with most of the primary sums in paper 2? I want to

My DD just tried this paper today and i also go through it myself. Most of the tough questions, my DD uses equation to solve them and she got it right. She remarked that equation make solving the questions easy. I taught my DD equation from Primary 4, so i am not so sure whether child will master the rule in less than one year time. But my advice is, if your DC is good and interested in Maths and willing to absorb the concept, it is not harm teaching them the equation way. -
mummy so kiasu:
2012 Maths paper standard is similar to 2011, a few tricky ones & two challenging ones. Easier than some top schools' papers.
My son took 2012 PSLE. Feedback is same as mummy so kiasu above.
Specifically that there are tricky ones so READ the questions properly.
\"Speed\" was a 2-3 marks question and not the challenging 4-5 marks question. -
I think the best time for revision now is during weekends.

I know, I am having the same problem with DS, so many projects and homework. But I am worried if DS does not start now. Unfortunately no sample timetable as each DC has different strengths and different activities. Sorry there is no wise or wonderful way to prepare the revision prog.
Do you have any \"sample\" revision timetable to share? Quite lost as see DS busy with homework everyday, how to plan revision?Just relax:
I think we as parents must start to think of proper revision timetable to start with DC. SC is P3-P6, MA is P4-P6 so somehow DC must start revising lower primary work as well early while still doing P6 current work.
Everybody please do this for DC. Important to pace your DC's revision.
The thing I did was get DS to prepare his own timetable for science starting with P3 first and then P4. P5 not necessary as should still be fresh from last year. So at least get 1 round of revision done for science p3 & p4. For me it is because science is DS weakest subject so have to spend more time and start revision earlier. For other DC it may be other subjects.
Then also for Maths I got DS to look at weak areas from P5 Maths SA2 paper and to revise and reinforce those Maths concepts that he was not good at. Again DS is weak in Maths so no choice have to revise now to give him more time to reinforce.
EL and CL he is average so he can start revision later, better for him to just keep up with current class work for these subjects. -
I totally agree with Just Relax that there is no “wise or wonderful way to prepare the revision prog”. Emphasis must be spreaded equally for EMS plus MT with greater time reserved for weaker subjects but trouble is they don’t have that much time.

Students strong in languages get higher aggregate score than those who do not do as well in Languages. I’ve seen those with 2A* in their Languages and 2As in Maths and Science get higher aggregate score than those with 2A* in Maths and Science and 2As in their Languages. So better not neglect the Languages because Language is not something that can be revised last minute.
An ex-teacher friend commented to me that it’s easy to pass Science actually unless one is very weak in the subject and does not read Science guide/notes. It’s easy to get As too. She shared that she made her weaker students (she is now a tutor) sit and read guide books and memorise key words because they are weak in expressing themselves and reading, mindmapping and memorising key words help these students. They are able to jump the grade from 40+ to 60+.
For Maths, it’s achievable to target A* through doing and doing and redoing the questions and learning the strategies and most important is to be able to finish the paper within the time allocation. She tutored a kid last year just after CA1, from D grade in CA1 to B grade in PSLE. But for languages, unfortunately it cannot be cramped last minute and it’s not that easy to get high As let alone A* and therein lies the difference in the aggregate score.
I am always telling my DD that when doing practice papers for Maths, to just please target and finish the paper within the time allocation so as to build up her speed. But it’s just so impossible with the distractions going round at home and I am not home always to monitor and enforce this. -
The PSLE format exam papers are available in Popular now.
