It is also an accepted military doctrine that you must not only be deadly but SEEN to be deadly as the Total Defence doctrine includes psychological warfare. The citizens of the small country must feel safe and the citizens of the bigger country must feel that many of their sons, brothers, fathers and husbands will die if there is an attack on a smaller country.

The fact is that it is the ignoramus folks who are making the silliest comments about defence. And they don't even have a rudimentary understanding of Singapore's history, military or otherwise! And to top it off, they are not displaying any capacity for acquiring new knowledge. How do you explain colour to a person who refuses to open his eyes? 🤷

P.S. For folks who are not acquainted with military lingo, you may wish to read this wiki for the definition of power projection as mentioned by 3Boys. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_projection

Thanks for the nice link. I am going to try some character building today and refrain from reacting to even the gravest provocation. šŸ†’

So I wonder why we are still spending so much...
But how do you know that it is not already the minimum?

I guess none of us here is expert in military to judge on that.

Often the person who does better is not smarter, quicker or stronger. He/she is just more committed. That applies to defence. It also applies to business, work and school.

We should try to remember that while we navel gaze on what level of economic growth we think is \"enough\", as well as what level of defence spending is \"enough\".
                  Disagree.. 2 different issues..

To attain a specific growth target, we may not be experts to judge how much population is needed. But, definitely we have different views of how much growth is desirable. The thing is, there's a compromise and we're aware of it.

It is not entirely up to us to decide how much growth we want to achieve. It also depends on what others are doing.

Nor is it a straightforward question of x% economic growth will require y% population growth.

If only life was that simple. That's what I am saying.

You said \"in the region\" in Singapore's context is \"SEA + Oceania + proximate parts of the Indian Ocean\". Ā

                      Harlequin said \"in the region\" refers to \"SEA only\".
is it important to define what is \"the region\"..?

I just felt that.. it is enough to focus on the \"relevant threats\"..

I suppose, US and China etc.. is not a \"relevant\" threat. Why would they wanna invade SG(not their immediate neighbour)? what do they gain? If they start a war for no reason.. wouldn't it be of the scale of WW3 already?? If they wanna project their forces that far..

However.. somewhere north who have been on not one occasion threaten to cut water supply is a \"relevant\" threat..... for example..

Hence, I feel it doesn't makes much sense to consider US or China as a \"threat\" for which we want to reasonably invest/prepare our arm forces against.

Yes exactly.. hence.. against \"bloated population growth\" != against \"economic growth or progress\"..
