        windows,

Yes dangdang will calculate the shipping charges before you make the payment. I don't how what is the formula they use, it is not 50%. An order of 100 RMB may have a shipping charge of 70 RMB. My recent order :
        商品金额合计:\t¥253.80
        运费:\t¥169.30

You don't save shipping charge by ordering more.
dangdang states that it takes 4-8 weeks to reach Singapore. But I received my books in less than 4 weeks.

        curiousl-ks,
You must activate Secure Online Shopping for your Citibank Credit Card. Read this webpage for more information.
        http://www.citibank.com.sg/SGGCB/APPS/portal/loadPage.do?tabId=creditcard&path=/promo/det/sos_overview.htm

You will need to setup a personal message and password. For example, you setup a personal message : curious and password kiasu123.

At the dangdang payment page, after you enter your credit card number, you will be connected to the Citibank server, and your personal message \"curious\" will be shown, and you need to enter your password kiasu123.

Note that if your payment fails to go through for whatever reason, you need to enter all your items into the shopping cart again and check out a new 订单。The previous 订单 will be automatically canceled after a few days.

Sometimes the Citibank server may have problems, you may have to try again the next day, or you may be asked to reset your Secure Online Shopping password.

It is not easy to get through when you are ordering for the first time, you need to keep trying. But it is well worth the effort. There is a huge collection of Chinese books at dangdang with many books that cannot be found in Singapore, and the prices are cheap.

          Dear all,

I just received more books from dangdang yesterday. I bought 2 series, 不一样的卡梅拉(6 books) and 能干的小海狸(7 books), total 13 books, cost about SGD 22 including shipping. It is very worth it !

不一样的卡梅拉 is the all time best selling series in China. My girl likes it very much.
Check out my blog for photos of the pages. Find out what kids in China love to read !

Hi Tamarind, thanks for the very detailed guidance. Will try it again. And yes, agree that the web has lots of good Chinese books at a reasonable price. If the online works, bye bye to the lugging of books from China! Everytime when we pass by bookshops in SG, just cldn’t bear to pay thinking of the original retail price in China…

Tks for the encouragement, Tamarind. OK I get myself a citibank card, sigh. The big deterrent is this wall of CHinese words that hits me when I open the website :(.

I better do it cos my son is already saying \"I hate Chinese!\". This is a word of warning to all parents - no exposure is no good, sigh. I asked him how come he can read. He says \"Just cos I can do it doesn't mean I like it.\" :faint:

                windows,

Local bookshops really know how to earn profits by charging so much more than the original retail price.
I encountered a lot of problems when first ordering from dangdang, tried many times before payment was successful. I was so happy when I finally received my books from them.

                Blobbi,
It is important to find very interesting Chinese books for kids to read, books that can make them laugh, cry, and can’t wait to find out what happens next. Kids also must read as many Chinese books as possible. If possible, read 1000 words everyday. We can forget about looking for good children’s books in Popular, their choice is really pathetic.

A child who can read Chinese books very easily, for example, if she can read 500 words in less than 5 mins, then she will not hate Chinese.

A child who has to think hard to figure out how to read the words, and if there are more than 20% of the words that she does not understand, then she will become discouraged. The next time she comes across those same words that she does not know, she will still not remember how to read them.

It is important to build up a strong foundation of the basic words, and then read as many books as possible.

                  Dear all,

In the first book of 四五快读:
                  http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20645179

The author shares about her daughter who knew 1000 words at 3 years old, and is able to read very thick Chinese books at 4 - 5 years old. The little girl loves to read, she often laughs and cries as she reads. When a child finds that reading Chinese is easy, she will naturally love to read in Chinese.

curiousl-ks, sorry I can't really remember the exact number of times. Around 6-10 tries.
Did you re-create a new order when you kept trying? Don't use back the same order #.
Also don't retry continuously. Try again the next day.

tamarind, as mentioned in one of my earlier posting, it's 50% of the original book price and not 50% of dangdang's price.
Dangdang's price is always discounted. That's why the shipping cost calculated will always be > 50% of your purchase
                      book cost.

When I ordered that time, my order included my friend's books.
Thus, I did up a detailed excel spreadsheet and the total shipping
cost that I calculated by per book basis worked out to be exactly
the same as the shipping cost dangdang billed me.
