Need suggestions for food items for < 30 pax
-
Am inviting hubby’s relatives to our place for a weekend lunch.
No. of pax < 30
If arrange for catering, am sure the amt of food leftover will be high as most of the relatives are elderly who do not eat much. Moreover, most catering requires a min pax of 30.
So I am thinking of preparing a simple lunch.
Appreciate your suggestions. -
depending on time (lunch/tea/dinner).
pohpiah? steamboat? these are more diy and you can be flexible about how much food placed and wastage theoretically can be kept small.
I had a party for ds some time back (very small group). bought most of the food from Royals - mee siam not bad (each portion feeds about 8-9 pax), sandwiches were divine plus some other stuff. If you exceed certain amount, they provide delivery. But not sure what your audience taste buds are like.

Nasi Lemak! Can get from Lee Wee Brothers or Qi Ji etc. Easy to serve, minimal mess.

Well, generally a curry pleases the adults and satays/chicken wings please the kids. You can add a sambal stingray or another main. Add a cooked veg, a salad, a starch (fried rice or turmeric rice or nasi lemak rice, or stir fried noodles). Some finger food (popiah, kueh pie tee, squid balls etc). Lots of fresh sambal, ketchup for kids. Fruits and agar agar.
Western food. Pizzas (spizzas are best) pasta, roasted chicken drumlets, cream soup, fresh corn. If more adventurous, add hummus/ salsa dip and tortilla chips, olives, and a selection of cheeses. ice cream/ brownies keep everyone happy (unless everyone watching cholesterol level and weight).
One of my friends love to do dinner gatherings (20pax). She will always have a huge roast, a big pasta or potato salad, greens, and an appetizer (tea eggs/grapes with cheese/ham with prune etc). Cheese plate, chocolates and wine at the end. -
There are many caterers who do mini buffets. I remember catering for 20pax from chilli padi.

1. Buttered rice with cinnamon, raisin and cashew nut.
2. Grilled chic wings or thighs
3. Grilled assorted hard veg seasoned with rosemary, garlic and butter. Salt and pepper.
4. Simple veg and chipolata stew.
5. Cake (get someone to bring it)
Item 2 and 3 can grill at same time in oven.
Item 4 can cook the day before.
Viola, no need to rush on actual day. -
Thank you for the suggestions.
The elders do not eat beef. The youngsters do not take mutton.
Did a headcount- 18 adults only. 2 young mothers still breastfeeding.
The other males r cholesterol conscious. -
If I cook curry chicken ( a whole chicken) with potatoes, should I prepare 20 chicken wings?
I am thinking of asking mil to cook braised duck n stewed pig leg which r her best dishes.
Should b enough for 18 pple?
Then I make a stir fry assorted mushrooms, a green salad, longan red dates drink. -
I second ammonite's suggestion.
Can't go wrong with curry chicken. I normally prepare mine with chicken parts instead of just wings. Unless if you actually meant the wings are for the kiddies ie. fried chicken wings. Curry can go very easily with rice or plain fried rice and even bread or baguettes.
BFing moms not in confinement or with babies below 6mths, should be able to eat anything unless they pantang about certain ingredients.
Stir fried assorted mushrooms, salad and longan red dates drink sounds complementing the whole theme nicely.

I juz hosted a kids party with about 10 adults, 7 kids. Mostly take-away but i cooked a chicken wing dish and asparagus bacon wrap.
1) Sushi platter - Sakura Fish Mkt
2) Salmon Yusheng - Sakae Sushi
3) Mushroom soup - Soup Spoon
4) Fried Bee Hoon - MIL fried
5) Fishball - Old Chang Kee
6) Cheese Tarts - Flor Patisserie
7) Chicken Wing - DIY
Asparagus Bacon Wrap - DIY
Chicken Wing
- Preheat oven 10min
- Marinate with oyster sauce, soya sauce, fish sauce, pepper, chicken powder (Knows brand)
- Cook for about 12 min
Asparagus Bacon Wrap
- Cut the asparagus to desired length
- Boil the asparagus (do not overcook)
- Wrap bacon round 3-4 sticks of asparagus
- Fried it under low fire
- remember to choose streaky bacon instead of back bacon. tried several types of bacon from different supermarket. Cold Storage still has the best bacon, not too salty and just the right size.
I'll be hosting another party this Sunday, abt 11pax. Elders, adults and kids :slapshead:
Decided that I'll not tire myself out ... ordered a mini buffet from Guan Hoe Soon Nonya Food. http://www.guanhoesoon.com
Keeping my fingers crossed that food will be ok ... :xedfingers:
