My child currently take piano lessons from a private teacher at Blk 31, Bishan Loft. She stopped lessons in December and hasn’t resumed since despite numerous follow-up calls from us. She cited the Dec holidays, then start of school, then CNY,…as reasons. Is it normal for a piano teacher to stop lessons for 3 mths, with no start date in view? Anyone has the same experience? I really don’t know how long more I have to wait.

This doesn’t sound good as a responsible full time teacher would have given some form of response and usually term break is about two weeks.

Personally I would see no reason to stop lessons with students. But what you experience may happen with part-time and some travelling teachers; I would not say it is common because I think there may be good teachers from this category. Because they might be preoccupied with their study or work, they may decide to put teaching piano in the backburner and resume when their schedule free up.

My suggestion is if this bothers you, you may consider switching to a full-time private (or music schools).

Hi: I’m looking for a piano teacher to teach my K1 twins (1 boy & 1 girl). They are pretty well behaved & have touched the piano quite often as their older brother has been learning for quite a few years. As they’re in full day child-care, I need a teacher who is available on weekends or can come to our home on weekday nights. I can bring them to the teacher’s house during weekends. I hope the teacher can teach them both together at the beginner stage rather than 1 by 1. I live in Serangoon so anywhere in Serangoon, Kovan or Hougang during weekends is fine for me but it must be accessible by public transport so that my wife can bring them. If anyone can recommend good piano schools in these areas, I do not mind sending my twins there as well. If the teacher works out well, I would like her to take over teaching my older boy as well who is in P6 and still at G5.

Hi All,


My boy is cuurently with Yamaha, taking group piano lessons
and going for Grade 1 exam Next march.

He used to be very motivated to learn new songs but sadly
in a group setting, having to wait for other kids to catch up
with the 3 Grade 1 songs, he gets rather bored during lessons
and is not playing much at home.

I have asked his teacher to give him some new songs to learn
but to no avail and she needs to help the rest of the students.

So I am in a fix now, thinking what to do?
I am afraid he may lose interest in playing the piano as
time goes.

My boy prefers learning in a group but the rest are too slow
so the teacher can't teach beyond the 3 G1 songs.

Should I switch him to individual lessons?
But I will need to get a very good teacher who relates well
to children and knows how to motivate kids to learn.
And costs wise, which is more viable?

Anyone has any good advice to share?

Hi, in this event, I suppose you should consider switching him to individual lessons as of now. That is because eventually staying in the group lessons would bore the child out & besides, the amount of attention focused on your boy is very minimal since you mentioned that the teacher has to focus on other students' performance.

Your boy may seem to enjoy the group performance because it's a group session & is definitely much more lively than 1-to-1.
But if you don't try, you never know.
On top of that, if your boy is particularly interested in music - all the more you shouldn't be afraid of pushing him onto a private individual lesson!
