Let it rest if it is a one off. There can be many shades of grey. But discuss with your child how to handle or avoid bullies /certain situations. In this way, it becomes a learning experience.

Bullying happens in most schools. MOE should step up more efforts in this area - by not brushing it aside and communicating to students what are channels to report and how to tackle bullies.

Is your DC stressed by the bullying? If so, don’t brush his fears away easily.
Are there name tags on the school uniform? If so ask your DC to note the exact names.
If not, ask him to speak up and tell the bullies loudly: ‘Hey, my mum would like to meet you, she wants to know your name and class.’
Ask your DC to avoid going to quiet places in the school which the bullies can easily corner him/her. In crowded places just shout in loudest voice to attract attention.

I used to brush aside my DS’ remarks when he said he was bullied until other parents alerted me. We should place more trust in our DC that they are not making a mountain out of a molehill and listen more to our DC when they complain about bullies. Schools are not doing enough to tackle bullying issues.

Bullies are cowards. Once they know parents and school teachers are aware of them or if your DC draws attention to the bullies in a crowded setting, they will back off. Standing up against real bullies is not a sign of over-protectiveness on your part.

Hope you solve the bullying issue for your DC soon. Jiayou.

My DS recently met a bully who pulled him to the side and said some REALLY nasty & crude things to him and being the youngest primary level of the session, they are usually the easiest target of the upper primary bullies.

He only rem’ber the colour of the nametag (which indicate the level) but didnt notice e name nor hv much impression of his face.
I guess there is nothing much we can do about it for now, except I told him if he were to see that bully again, STARE at his name and RUN & report to the teacher IMMEDIATELY.

We have always teach our kids how to handle bullies in school but when faced with a real situation, they have to handle by themselves. There is just this much we parents & teachers can do… we cant be there 24/7 watching over them. Hopefully they will learn to be smarter and protect themselves better each time.

Yes, bullying happen in top good schools too. My friend’s son in SJI got bullied by the upper secondary too and it is not one-time.

Ask your DS not to be alone at all times. When the bully approaches him again, ask his friend to look out his name too so you have a witness. Then go to General Office and ask for Discipline Master straightaway, not Form Teacher.

Comfort and be there for him.

Yes, bullies in pri sch targets the lower primary kids or the quiet timid type.
But bullies are scaredy cats themselves.
Just ask your DS to say loudly to him to shoo off but ensure that your DS is not alone or in some obscure corners of the school.
Always stay in places where there are many kids or teachers around.

I guess my DS was a random target as the big boy caught him when they were crossing paths along e corridor during recess.
And ya i told him to stick around his friends now instead of wandering around alone himself (which he normally doesnt)...

S'times i do \"role play\" with my kids - I as the bully, pulling their hair, punching their face, making fun of their names.. etc.. to let them have a taste of what bullies normally will do and tell them how to react in such situations...
Well, hopefully they dont become the bully one day... :skeptical:

DD1 (pri 5 in a all girls’ school) was slapped on the face during class just before CNY. DD1 only told me 1 week later because she was upset the bully may be elected as prefect and she actually thought the CNY celebration would help her forget this incident.

My first question to her was "Did you slap her back?"
I was relieved when she nodded.

Even as other classmates looked on and asked that damn girl "why did you slap her?"
The bully just said "because i feel like it!"

I dont care what other parents think. Everyone would said its wrong to hit back. But when this slapping incident happens to your kid, then you may understand what I mean.

My girl is rather "mild n timid" and not agressive type of girl.

Till now I have not told the form teacher because DD1 trusted me.

But I had told DD1 if that bully ever slaps her again, I expect DD1 to pin down that damn girl and knock her out.

I do not mind being called to school with a BIG GRIN on my face.
