      TheAnswer:
      hi

I need some help..my son is struggling with English compre...cld you plz suggest me some assessment books to revise
For Sec 1 to Sec 4 students, I recommend the following books. Some of the books below are quite tough but it's good to practice on the harder questions cos things will only get harder.

      1. EPH Excel in O level Comprehension by Vanita Pal

The book covers skills on time management during exam, building reading skills, understanding comprehension questions, summary writing and practice papers.

For each comprehension passage, there are key points beside the paragraphs. My students find them very useful.

      2. Casco O level Vocabulary (more suitable for sec 3/4)

This book covers vocab, idioms, parts of speech, commonly confused words, synonyms and phrasal verbs.

      3. EPH Upper Secondary Situational Writing Handbook

Awesome book! Teaches skills in writing.

      4. Upper Secondary Summary Guide and Practice

I think the books are also suitable for lower sec because at the end of the day, they have to do O level standard papers. Start early!
I bought the books in popular but I'm not sure if the books are still in stock! Might have reversed versions.[/quote]

      :thankyou: for the tips.

          janet_lee88:

My son was afraid I'll scold him for a 52% grade for Chinese...but with so many tests, I close one eye but reminded him to revise constantly.

My daughter is currently in NYGH and failing Chinese is quite normal for them.. But NY Chinese really too chim haha.

Anyway, Failing HCL or juz borderline in sec 1 is not uncommon......esp so in an IP SAP sch...
I dunno if my this post will provide some comfort to those who do badly for their 1 st HCL test....
My gal used to get distinctions for her HCL in upper primary levels.....BUT
When she was in DHS in sec 1, she only obtained near to 60 marks for her 1 st HCL test(full paper) 😓 :faint:
Needless to say, i was shocked...... :scared:
Encourage and told her that she needs to put in extra effort to pull up her socks .....
And i could see that her chinese, be it written or spoken did improve by leaps in DHS.....

There is really no short cut esp in languages ......hardwork and determination is the key.....
Try Improve on the 4 aspects......listening, speaking, reading and writing.....

After hearing tests, tests and tests week after week since school reopens, sec 1 kids are having their first (real) common tests NOW. My younger one is also having CA1.

              Starting tomorrow…a week of tests!

After that comes MARCH and another break! Since PSLE until now, I still haven’t quite settle down. Finding it difficult focus…I haven’t looked at the sec 1 Math yet. Hiaz really no time or maybe lazy. Just reading up on Geography, Science helping DS with his revision.

My DS is still having his Common Tests. Completed English, Geography and Science last week. Did well for Science but have not gotten back results for the other subjects. Said English was tough but confident in doing well for Georgraphy.

Today having Higher Chinese and tomorrow Literature.

Son started common tests last Fri with Geog and Math. Today Lit and Science…ends on Thur. Then my younger one starts her CA1.

I’ve adopted hands-off approach this year…firstly, it’s difficult to plan any schedule. So he has to learn to manage time himself…when to study for what subject. With one load less, I can focus on younger one more.

DS got mood. If that topic he likes, no need to teach him anything also he can get all the details right. If it’s uninteresting to him…aiyo, have to knock it in by turning on my loud speakers.

Earth, Landforms and Volcanoes very good. Map reading sleeping or dreaming away.
Thank goodness sci still interest him and he cleared 80% for the surprise test 2 weeks ago. Phew…

These days got lesser time with DS no.1 cos of longer school hours and no.2 needs to be coached too. Revisions got to go on bullet train speed so no time for DS no.1 's wonderland.

I am worried for my DS' Literature test.

He said the teacher very boring and everyone dozes off during lesson time. DS said he tried to keep awake but is a struggle. DS said one day Literature teacher did not come and the whole class erupted with joy. So naughty, must :spank: them.
