How much is this 1.5 hrs iq assessment? Do u need to queue a long time at kk hospital before your turn come?

      phtthp,

I think I have asked you previously, but I might have missed out your reply.

Can we know how old is your kid? Is he/she also diagnose already?

Regarding your qn, the IQ assessment shld be around $200-$300+ after subsidy. AS we are given a timeslot for the IQ test, we shouldn't wait that long during assessment.

We paid less than $200 as subsidized patient.

From the time we saw the doctor in KKH to request for a psy assessment, to the time of psy assessment itself, it took about 2 months. But that included rejecting the first appointment which was one month apart cos the appointment was in the afternoon and we wanted a morning time slot.

As the assessment itself was based on appointment, we did not have to wait when we turned up at the assessment proper.

Thanks ImMeeMee, really appreciate you sharing with us. Thank you for your tips as well. I will try to request for morning slot. I think my boy perform better in morning too.

Nugget, hope it helps you one way or another, even though I thought my description was quite brief.

Different kids will have their own strong areas and different areas of weakness, so I find it hard to write down everything at one go. My doter scored above average in verbal general knowledge, but she was placed below average for her word knowledge. Meaning, she was not able to describe the subject matter well enough and needed much prompting. She also scored relatively well for non-verbal, but she was placed below average in the third segment, where some writing is required. Psy explained to us that it was not a case where she didnt know and couldnt write, but rather a case of her knowing but not wanting to write.

Depending on your child's strengths and weaknesses, you may like to focus on specific areas during this period. Not doing quantum leap things like placing the child on any professional program at this point to create a false baseline, but rather finding opportunities during daily life to help your child in the specific areas. For example, where your child is verbal, talking to your child about different things (basic groups like animals, transport, food, fruits could be a good bet), which group they belong to, what color and size (where applicable), where do you see them, where they live (for animals), what is their function etc.

BTW, psy also asked my doter to write the alphabet, and numbers 1-10. And about 5 basic words where she was required to do her own spelling. There was also some basic reading required. Based on what I observed, the things that were tested were not overly advanced for their age at 5.5yo, but more of a case where the child was required to perform and bring out the things that the child knows.

Hope this helps in your preparation.

            Thanks again ImMeeMee,

You have shared plenty. At least you let me know the sequence of what will be tested. Now I roughly have an idea. I am pretty nervous myself even though I tell myself not to.

Spelling, my son cannot spell, or maybe he can spell only 3 letter words but he can read all words required for his level… The grouping of living things and none living things he is also quite weak. Will practice with him.

Do you know your dd IQ score immediately? When are you seeing the KKH doctor again for final review?

yes, quite some jitters there for me. Having my dh with me to calm me down and keep me in check did help though.

In fact, I have declared myself 'off' from this whole thing for a week just to give myself a break. Also need to do some internal rationalization. Will pick up next week and see what is the next focus. Maybe more self help.

BTW, psy will not likely ask whether the subject is living or non-living thing, cos this is quite a complex concept. Spelling was more of 3 letter words. Thought I saw 'the' on the piece of paper.

Psy explained to us about her performance using the IQ bell-curve. She was kind enough to explain to us about my doter's performance within each sub-segment, rather than to just fall blindly on the numbers. She also took time to point out her strengths and weaknesses, and we had the opportunity to discuss school placement options with her. We were told the detailed report and exact scores will only be ready in about a few weeks time, and thereafter we could start to work on school placement. We were not told that we need to see any doctor again.

I see, so have you decided on delaying 1 more year or going for mainstream next year?

Sigh, now I am getting the jitters too. Glad yours is over...

I think I have a doc appt after my IQ assessment. But let me confirm it again when they called.

                  Hi

I'm looking for schools that has supportive aed lbs for my ds. One of the schools that I've shorlisted (based on vacancies in the later phases) is Zhonghua pri. Any parents here have info about that school aed lbs? cant seem to find the aed lbs on the school website.
Zhonghua Secondary has good AED LBS support as our PM's lee son is enrolled there. Not too sure about Zhonghua Primary. But you can visit the school during their orientation to find out more or email the school to meet up or visit their premises.

Nugget, if I can cross the bridge, so can you. We all have fears, OK to feel jitters, just dont affect daily life badly.

Now rationalizing about school placement and deferment. Will let you know when I am ready.

Sorry to burst the bubble. My student was PM Lee's classmate in 1997 or 1998. The position of AED hasnt been created then. I understand he received individual coaching during Chinese lessons as he was exempted from taking Chinese.

My understanding is St Andrew's School has 3 AEDs - behv (ASD), SpLD (dyslexia) & counsellor (I can't remember). My student has SPD ( none of the above), so he didn't get regular help. I feel that kids with moderate ASD (ie with some degree of rigidity & tantrums ) may fare better here. The milder ones may not receive adequate attention.

Some AEDs can't handle ASD kids with difficult behaviors.

Personally, I prefer schools with 2 sessions as the AED is able to allocate time for P1 & 2s. In a single-session school, the AED has to attend to all kids (p1-6) with special needs in 1 morning.

THanks for the insight. But going forward in 2015 or 2016, all primary school will be converted to single session already. Hopefully all schools will be assigned with 2 AED LBS by then.

Yes St Andrews is one of the better mainstream school that caters for ASD kids. But distance is an issue. Also unless you get into phase 2B, else its not gurantee a space.
