Another way of looking at things is that it is part of the child’s learning process to deal with bad or less than ideal teachers. It may mean poorer marks initially, and may mean needing to find help from other sources, but it can help make a child more resourceful and more accustomed to independent learning, all good skills in the long run. In some of the top universities in the world, the staff are actually very poor teachers (they are usually good researchers), and students often learn despite their teachers, not because of their teachers. I am not advocating only hiring poor teachers, but since not all teachers can be good, there is some value in learning how to cope without good teachers.

Son just passed first Literature common test…16/30…combined with the class test earlier, he got a B. It’s not really about the child being academically strong or not…at sec 1, my boy needs guidance as everything is new. At the end of the day, he still needs to learn how to study independently.

        Hey kwcllf,
Using Ferrero Roche chocolate to teach geography…that sure spices up the lesson. The teacher really put in effort to make the lesson interesting.

Interesting lessons and pretty teachers…that play a BIG part in my dear son’s life in secondary school.

When my boys was in P6 last year, his former school principal changed his strategy by putting the HOD & subject heads in 6B to 6D. None of them took 6A, which was supposed to be the best class. However 6A produced the best results in PSLE & the over all performance of the school also turn out to be the best in school history. It shows that self motivation is more important than good teachers. Top students are usually self motivators and they do a lot of research & self study. My boy is still far from that. Just hope he can better manage his time & organize his stuffs.

DS super happy yesterday. He said he was 3rd in class for his Georgraphy test (75%). CL also got 72.5%. Can't say the same for his Math but I am happy. 🕺

My DS didn’t do too badly for his Common Test…phew!

              Ranges from A1 to B4.

But what I am most happy to see is that he is putting in effort for self-study. He is taking Higher Chinese, which he used to struggle when in primary school. But since he got "Merit" at the PSLE exam, I could see that he is more motivated to do well in the subject now. He has been reading up alot on Chinese proverbs, which my DW bought for him at Popular, in addition to those required to buy by his teacher on top of his textbooks.

Great to hear that...the first common test in Sec 1.
75% for Geog is an A1 :rahrah:
Son got a B for literature...I am relieved he passed.
As for the rest, he did well and though I am happy, this mummy here will advise him to continue to work hard and not get complacent (son called me a wet blanket). I am happy honestly but just don't want good grades to get into his head and become swell headed.

Same here. Hope those good grades don't blow his head off. My DS has a tendency to fall into that and can suddenly fail. Then will wake up and do better. That's why I was secretly happy he failed his Math test 1. It's wake up call! Now scared already so test 2 up by 20%. This fellow like stock market.

Wow.. Your son seem to be very motivated after he got \"merit\" for his HCL. My boy did not do HCL in pri school & I only expect a pass for his HCL. He is not as motivated as your boy as I do not see him read any Chinese book at home.

                      Congrats Janet & fifiyeo,
Both of your sons did well. It is a good start for Sec 1 & it will motivate them to work hard in order to maintain the good grades. The good results will give the boys more confident in themselves. The boys can do it if they put in more effort. Janet, your boy is right. Don't be a wet blanket leh! Sometime I make the same mistake as you. Give him a treat & a hug for his effort. Cheers! :rahrah:

Son didn’t do HCL…already struggling with normal Chinese. The cloze and comprehension killing him. Math tutor wanted A1…he got A2…and was afraid to get scolding. Consoled him that it is possible…there is mid year exams in May. This March holiday, revise from scratch. Practise more questions.

Continue to work hard…it is easy to slip downwards. But I will let him play a little this holiday.
