I am happy honestly but just don't want good grades to get into his head and become swell headed.

Same here. Hope those good grades don't blow his head off. My DS has a tendency to fall into that and can suddenly fail. Then will wake up and do better. That's why I was secretly happy he failed his Math test 1. It's wake up call! Now scared already so test 2 up by 20%. This fellow like stock market.

My DS didn't do too badly for his Common Test.....phew!

        Ranges from A1 to B4.

But what I am most happy to see is that he is putting in effort for self-study. He is taking Higher Chinese, which he used to struggle when in primary school. But since he got \"Merit\" at the PSLE exam, I could see that he is more motivated to do well in the subject now. He has been reading up alot on Chinese proverbs, which my DW bought for him at Popular, in addition to those required to buy by his teacher on top of his textbooks.
Wow.. Your son seem to be very motivated after he got \"merit\" for his HCL. My boy did not do HCL in pri school & I only expect a pass for his HCL. He is not as motivated as your boy as I do not see him read any Chinese book at home.

DS super happy yesterday. He said he was 3rd in class for his Georgraphy test (75%). CL also got 72.5%. Can't say the same for his Math but I am happy. 🕺

Great to hear that...the first common test in Sec 1.
75% for Geog is an A1 :rahrah:
Son got a B for literature...I am relieved he passed.
As for the rest, he did well and though I am happy, this mummy here will advise him to continue to work hard and not get complacent (son called me a wet blanket). I am happy honestly but just don't want good grades to get into his head and become swell headed.

          Congrats Janet & fifiyeo,
Both of your sons did well. It is a good start for Sec 1 & it will motivate them to work hard in order to maintain the good grades. The good results will give the boys more confident in themselves. The boys can do it if they put in more effort. Janet, your boy is right. Don't be a wet blanket leh! Sometime I make the same mistake as you. Give him a treat & a hug for his effort. Cheers! :rahrah:

Son didn’t do HCL…already struggling with normal Chinese. The cloze and comprehension killing him. Math tutor wanted A1…he got A2…and was afraid to get scolding. Consoled him that it is possible…there is mid year exams in May. This March holiday, revise from scratch. Practise more questions.

Continue to work hard…it is easy to slip downwards. But I will let him play a little this holiday.

Actually, my DS don't read any Chinese books although I always encourage him to :slapshead: . I told him that he MUST read Chinese books in order to improve on his Chinese. But it seems to fall on deaf ears and he only read the Chinese proverbs book and the other Chinese books he uses in school.

Although he may get by now, I am afraid he may struggle later on.

My kids simply refuse to read Chinese books…they only come into contact with Chinese when they have tuition homework and 2 hours of tuition. That’s it!

But scoring an A for PSLE did help a little…at least he is not switched getting work done.

Tutor has made him memorize proverbs…though it is not mentioned in syllabus, kids have to learn 成语. My friend told me it is bcos of 作文.

He..he.. In term of Chinese, my kids have the same attitude as yours. Only during Chinese lesson & homework.I have stopped all my boy tuition, except Chinese. How to stop that 2 hours? I guess it is quite common that kids speak & read English only.

2 hours of chinese tuition…tuition homework split 2 days bcos there is also school hw to be done daily plus spelling/dictation (younger one). I can’t stop the tuition bcos I can’t teach secondary level Chinese.

Other than that, I let them watch Chinese drama sometimes. But speaking mandarin at home is a very very conscious effort lasting just 5 minutes.

I also cannot stop CL tuition too. Everything else I can try to figure out but for CL I had better get help and don’t play play. Half the words I’ve already forgot how to read them. Ooops!

The Chinese standard today is beyond our time. I dare not take the risk.
Holiday homework has been given out. I told my son to get them completed ASAP...pref before holiday starts...then he can revise subjects.
He is playing these few days...daughter has CA.
