Ya, the lollipops are for sucking during take off and landing.
The candies are the vit C soft chewies - ribena or scott brand. They dun really like whole grains leh. Last time I used to give bread. So they can chew and swallow during take off. The baby will just suck pacifier or eat baby biscuits.
Cannot give mine raisins cos they eat super fast lol… -
Hi
Can I ask if any parents here joined any support group for autism or special needs? Please share your experience if so.
I’m thinking of joining one -
Hi Junemom
Every special needs child is different and rather than looking at HFA, it would be good if you go deeper and understand where your child is good at and need more help on.
My son is considered High Functioning Autism as he is verbal and is able to cope with daily live relatively well. However, we still have to work on his rigidity and his sensory issues. He is doing home based ABA and has privvate OT and ST in addition to EIPIC
Maybe you can share your child’s situation. -

I considered this thread and all mummies here are my support group. We will help and support each other, share info, answer questions and a few of our kids are of the same age.Hi

I'm thinking of joining one
But I think mostly the mummies here are all HF ASD.
What kind of support group are you looking for? Face to face type? -
There is a discussion on-going on this site under Health-Special Needs on autism. You should post there.

I think online forum such as this is great when I can learn and share from other parents’ experiences and knowledge. Though I have come to accept his condition, I do have a lot of questions of understanding his condition and I felt that I want to learn all the aspects of tackling and coping with my son. I feel that I am walking around blind-folded and learning through touching and falling (ouch!). The additional areas I am looking at:
1) Hear from professionals like Speech and Occupational Therapist on the cause of certain behaviours or speech issues and learn a few techniques of overcoming
2) How each type of intervention can help, such as ABA, TEACCH or even nutrition can make my son feel better
3) The process of applying for the different types of government-run/subsidised centres and the feedback on these centres - I think very often one parent will come online and ask about how to apply and which centre is good type of questions. If there is a central place to get updated information, it would be good. Though CEL website provides the key data, it does not provide info on teaching methods and what type of kids are suitable
4) Parents’ success stories of bringing HF kids through mainstream preschool and to primary schools
And also to feedback to government on the different needs that is required for these special children
My son is 3 going on 4 and I find information very lacking in this area.
Not sure if ARC or AAS has any type of parents’ support group. If anyone has come across, please suggest. -

What happens if the school our child in do not have an AED LBS or he or she left? can we request a transfer on that grounds? anyone can help?
sweetbaby
As I understand, all primary schools are supported by AED LBS. If the person has left, chances are that there will be a replacement? Unless your child is in secondary school now? -
angel_09,
Have you son went to KKH for assessment? If he have, KKH CDU will kick start a series of things for you.
1. Once they suspect your child has ASD, they will send you for prep talks/workshops, I can't remember the name but its held in KKH and health promotion board, there is one talk that talks abt EIPIC where parents will also be break out into sessions to talk abt special needs of their child. There is also a talk held by the speech therapist touching on the fundamentals of speech delay and problems faced by each parents who attended. There is also a workshop on how to break down task for your child.
2. After attending those talks in (1), you have a chance to talk to those specialist to ask questions.
Also for course, I refer to here : http://autism.org.sg/training/calendar.php?cat=all
Every year we are entitled $300 of training courses that we can attend to help our children.
I have also attended this course called \"sign post\" on management difficult behaviour for special needs which I find it useful for myself at KKH.
3. If you have attended the EIPIC talk as I mentioned in (1), then you will asked to fill up this form to indicate which EIPIC centre you want to be enrolled in. I think the key to kick start all these process is to see a doctor for initial assessment. I seen mine at KKH. Some of the mummies goes to NUH. If you want private route, I am not too sure who to go about.
4. Only a handful of us here (Mashy, chibi, slmkhoo, specialmumboy) attends mainstream Primary School (sorry if I missed out any other names). But we are always facing challenges and we are always solving them. Not too sure what you mean by success stories? Cos I am sure we are all still in the mids of this. Problems always surface on and off.
As for feedback to government, I also feel there is a lack in this area, I have tons of suggestions as well. Govt are just not hearing enough from us.
KKH have previously asked if I wanted to join a support group last time. But I declined cos its held on sat. Not too sure if they get going or not. As for ARC or AAS, I am not sure.
But I want to attend those courses that I have pointed out in (2). Can help to ask when I am attending the course there.
Hope this helps. You are not alone. We are all here to help.
Have your child been diagnose yet? -
Mummies
If you have suggestions for the government, can just email them. Whether or not they will implement is another question. But no harm just emailing them to let them know the challenges you face.
For social welfare services, childcare issues - email to Minister Chan Chun Sing.
For education, primary schools - email to Minister Heng Swee Keat
You can find their email addresses at http://www.sgdi.gov.sg
They may not reply to you directly but I am sure they will send your suggestions to their officers for considerations. I think is a good time to do it now since the government's SG Conversation exercise is still going on. I had voiced out my suggestion in one recent session and I managed to get the contact of a MOE planning officer who is looking at special needs education. Have sent emails to him as well and he is pretty receptive about it and took time to come back to me to seek clarification. -

wah ... nugget, :goodpost:
Actually I would love to connect with mummies whose kids are not in mainstream too. I believe they have a wealth of knowledge to learn from.
