What factors should I consider when getting toys for kids?
-
My older kids are around that age range.
They play zoob, Lego, laq, duplo, wooden construction set, role play toys, board games, cooperative games, kids' card games, thinking games, they have their share of cars, dolls and stuff toys, science stuff, puppets.
iPad and iPhone only use as last resort.
TV give and take. Some days I can achieve 0 hour. Sometimes 2 hrs ( throughtout the day) -
At this time, i buy group game toys, like tumbling monkeys, role playing toys and board games. I want my kids to develop interaction with other kids as well as with some family members.
Kids right now are very smart, they know how to use and play with computers and other electronic gadget on their own. -
Be sure to avoid toys with sharp objects and heavy ones. Blocks, cars and wooden toys.Toys producing sounds, educational toys (shapes and animal puzzles). Toys that are suitable for his age.
-
When I buy things (toy or anything else), I look at the value of the things. Other factors will be the interest of the kids, the price, the quality and etc.
E.g. when my girl was few months old, I bought jumperoo and exersaucer for her, these 2 toys can stimulate her brain when she play it and free me some time to do houseworks, the toys were passed down to my son and when my son learned walking I sold them away for quite a good price. So there is a resale value for the toys, and the toys is of good quality to my kids.
Subsequently I would normally buy educational toys for them after they passed 2, the toys are fun to them and they are also learning when playing it, so very beneficial to them and worth the money spent. When they out-grown the toys I would normally passed down to others or sell it away.
So in conclusion, when I pay for something I want to ensure I’m paying for something value for money, beneficial to them, and of course must be what they like to play too. -
If the child is a girl, I would buy her woolen dolls. If a boy, I will buy him a toy car and a toy gun.
-
I will first check the price and safety. Next will check what the toy got to with educating my kid - motor skills, taking turns, role play, learning purposes? If not much achieve, I will not buy. I do not buy toy guns, toy swords, arrows for my kid.
-
When kids were younger, I bought them many cards game that both siblings could play together, like those Mix-and-Match card game, UNO, Jenga and their favourite up till today is Lego.
My main concern is that the toy must definitely be safe. So Jenga and Legos were only given to them when they were at least 3.5years old so that they don’t chew on them and get choke on it. At that time, I was very into articles that kept psychoing me that children play time can be educational too. So the toys that I bought for them have to work some part of their brain e.g. creativity.
DD can come up to me after piecing her lego bits and tell me that’s the toilet bowl, that’s the kitchen top, study table and so on when its just a brick haha. So in a way, I guess she is working on her memory to understand what those different bricks represents. Strictly no ipad and computer games. I forbid my kids to have facebook accounts for games and my house up till today has no ipad or iphone. Only hubby has a smart phone for work.
