Imp75:
I am interested to be a part-time lecturer (ie work 5 half days). What are the polys/tertiary institutions looking for when hiring such part-timers? What workload would you have (pre-class prep?) and what is the expectations for part-timers?
I think different courses and polys have different requirements. Anyway, it's not a permanent position and they will only have when they need (e.g. full time staff go on maternity, sabbatical etc). So you need to source out and ask around. Best is if you know someone in there. -
yup will check from school but would you be able to share from your own experience like do you have to spend time prepping prior to class etc, expectations from school generally?

Depends largely on the person that hand over the module to you. Some lecturers have very detailed lessons plans, notes and slides. So you just have to familiarize and teach. And set assignments and test questions according to the lesson plan. Need to mark test, assignments and compile scores at end of term.
If you teach lab, have to go through the experiment beforehand to familiarize, cos teaching scale equipment can be diff fr the actual industry ones. And mark lab reports.
If the lecturer before you is very messy with very messy documentation then a lot more effort would be required to sort them out.
However if they require to come up with the curriculum material fr scratch, you will be paid separately. -
Dora1:
You mentioned that your industry has the highest FTs. Have you considered the possibility that you can't go back to your industry once you are out for a few years since there are FTs around that can easily fill your shoes? If you are mentally prepared to switch line and start fr scratch when u go back to work, then it's fine.
For me, I enjoyed my time as a SAHM mum very much. However, when my hubby nearly lost his job, we realized that it is extremely risky to survive on single income in SG, unless the working spouse has a super stable job like a teacher.
It's diff fr our parent's time where my dad worked for the same co for 30 years and retrenchment is unheard of.
So this is stg that you need to consider. How vulnerable is your DW's job in SG?
Also, I'll suggest that you take up some part time work so that your résumé looks better.
I was teaching part time in poly, just a few hours a week. That is a fall back plan that you can consider.
interesting prespective. yes, DW job is considered stable but yes depending on 1 income in sg is really unstable. we also gt to cater for unexpected situations and medical bills.
i am keen on teaching but not keen on admin work that comes with MOE syllabus. :siam:
But i doubt i can teach in poly or MOE as i have no prior teaching experience. -
Irrelevant:
i can only say \"to each his own\"
This remark piqued my curiosity.
This is not the first time I have seen this factor being cited in relation to caring for one's parents. {I'm not suggesting in any sense that Dora1 does not take care of her parents} I have seen quite a bit of TV programmes or interviews that the aggrieved parent(s) would rather rely on public assistance schemes/charity/manual jobs than to burden their children with their problems.
I'm puzzled. Personally, I do not see myself as being particularly filial BUT cutting my retired parents' allowance is the farthest thing in my mind. I would rather sell my car, downgrade my flat, cut my kids' pocket money, etc than touch my aged parents' allowance. Don't other folks feel the same way? :scratchhead:
also, m curious, how much in term of percentage do you give your parents for allowance? i give only very little 10% of my gross salary. -

Like most stay at home mum ( i wont say all), I dont list out my daily timetable like you guys do.
It's like all pre-programmed liao.
But now that I looked at the timetables that you guys planned, I am beginning to feel so competent myself!
Imagine how one does all these plus squeezing in 2 (lunch and dinner)cooking time slots which you guys left out, ( Ah, yes mel2sg did mention steam fish and cook rice
)
i'll say : Hurray! For all full fledged SAHP! :boogie: -
SBKS:
Wow. All so early waking up. :nailbite: Ironing everyday? I don't iron my kid's uniform. If go primary school, probably I will get lots of uniform and all iron at one go.
