      Jacintha and Isabel shared a number of cookies in the ratio 2:1.

      J ------ 2 units
      I ------ 1 unit

      The number of cookies that Jacintha had was 1/4 of the number of cookies Evelyn had.

      E ------- 8 units

      7 units ------ 63 (If Evelyn had 63 more cookies than Isabel?)

      1 unit ------ 9

      Total number of cookies ------- 11*9 ------ 99

          Private transport ------ 12 units

          2 units ------- 180

          1 unit ------- 90

          Number of students ------- 35*90 -------- 3150

              Grandma had some yellow and purple sweets in the ratio of 9:7. On Monday, she made 54 more yellow sweets. On Tuesday she gave away 44 purple sweets and sold 129 yellow sweets. The number of yellow sweets to the number of purple sweets became in the ratio of 6:5. How many yellow sweets are there in the end?

                      Wilson spent equal amounts of money on 5 exercise books and 7 pencils. Each exercise book cost 30cents more than each pencil. How much did Wilson spend altogether?

                        This is a typical question on “Units and Parts”.

                        The tricky part in this question is changes are made in two stages unlike the common questions where you have single stage change.

                        For the yellow sweets, grandma made 54 sweets on Monday and sold 129 sweets on Tuesday, this gives a deficit of 75 (129-54)

                        9 units – 75 -------- 6 parts

                        7 units – 44 -------- 5 parts

                        Equalise the parts

                        45 units – 375 ------- 30 parts

                        42 units - 264 -------- 30 parts

                        45 units – 375 -------- 42 units - 264

                        From here 1 unit ------- 37
