Using 3/5 of her money, Chloe could buy 11 notebooks. If she was given an extra $2, she could use it together with the remaining amount of money to buy another 8 such notebooks. How much money did Chloe have?

      Hi

      3 units ------ 11NB

      2 units + 2 ------ 8NB

Make the number of NB equal

      24 units ------- 88NB

      22 units + 22 ------- 88NB

      24 units ------- 22 units + 22

      1 unit ------- 11

      Chloe --------- 5*11 ------ 55

      Best wishes

      Thx Tianzhu

Grandma had some yellow and purple sweets in the ratio of 9:7. On Monday, she made 54 more yellow sweets. On Tuesday she gave away 44 purple sweets and sold 129 yellow sweets. The number of yellow sweets to the number of purple sweets became in the ratio of 6:5. How many yellow sweets are there in the end?

        Pl help...

Wilson spent equal amounts of money on 5 exercise books and 7 pencils. Each exercise book cost 30cents more than each pencil. How much did Wilson spend altogether?

              Hi

This is a typical question on “Units and Parts”.

The tricky part in this question is changes are made in two stages unlike the common questions where you have single stage change.

For the yellow sweets, grandma made 54 sweets on Monday and sold 129 sweets on Tuesday, this gives a deficit of 75 (129-54)

              9 units – 75 -------- 6 parts

              7 units – 44 -------- 5 parts

              Equalise the parts

              45 units – 375 ------- 30 parts

              42 units - 264 -------- 30 parts

              45 units – 375 -------- 42 units - 264

              From here 1 unit ------- 37

              Best wishes

                Hi

It helps to draw some simple diagram.

Cost of 7 pencils ------- Cost of 5 exercise books

Let cost of 1 pencil ------ 1 unit

                Hence, cost of 1 exercise book ------- 1 unit + 30

                7 units ------- (1 unit + 30)*5

                7 units ------- 5 units +150

                2 units ------ 150

                1unit ------- 75

                7 units ------- 525

                Amount spend altogether -------- 525*2 ------- 1050 ------- $10.50

                Best wishes

                        Hi

                        Please confirm with your source.

                        I think \"received\" should be read as \"gave away\".

Hakim and Suresh had some money in the ratio of 13 : 8. When they each gave away $133, Hakim will have 4 times as much money as Suresh. How much did Hakim had at first?

The answer for the revised question is 273.

                        Best wishes
