May I ask why you are taking grade 1 this march when you plan to sit for grade 5 next year? The grade 1 is rather redundant don't you think?

My piano teacher at Yamaha music school wants me to take Grade 1, not sure why.
Yeah it is redundant and a waste of money.

P.S. I've been learning the piano for 1 year and 3 months.

Since you are an adult learner, you should be able to take grade 5 theory within a much shorter frame; I've crash coursed older students to grade 5 within a much shorter period. As long you can read staff notation comfortably you can immediately begin grade 5 theory preparation as the syllabus is cumulative.
Hello Dreamaurora, thanks for your reply. 🙂

Hi, how to train for aural?

My dd simply cannot remember the tune (too long for her) so has difficulties clapping or singing. Her problem is short retention span so by the time teacher reached 2nd half of playing the aural scores she already forgotten those at the front so always stumble when ask to sing

When she play those aural scores at home she can sing along alright. So I think it's not so much on singing but more of her short retention. In exam, I think can't expect her to play the tunes though, otherwise aural become additional sight reading

How to tackle this? If go higher grade aural scores will be even longer I suppose :nailbite:

acquiring melodic memory is very similar to acquiring memory for language dictation. If one is unfamiliar with the vocabulary and sentence structure being tested, its very difficult to recite it back. The same principle applies for music.

What I do with my students is that I will normally assign one short piece a week for quick study at home. At the next lesson, the student will play back for me the piece and then afterwards sing the right hand melody or left hand melody from memory while i play the other part. This way, they can expand their melodic and rhythm vocabulary.

for the actual melodic memory test, it is a good idea to remember the rhythm first the first time the melody is played and then the pitch is remembered the second time it is played. So what i do is ask student to clap back the rhythm the first time and second time sing and clap at the same time.

I find music from rosler piano (ard $4800) sweet melody, gentle flow, compared to Yamaha. Feel like buy rosler piano. May I hear your professional view?

Never tried this piano before. Last time I went to pianomaster didn't have this brand.

Hmm, maybe I can organise piano tasting trips since so many people ask about obscure brands nowadays.

                  Hi all,

This is an essay I wrote recently about motivating students recently in preparation for DipABRSM Teaching. Hope some of you find it useful.

Hi there parents. I am back after being away for a while to settle my school work.

I just took my G1 music theory on last saturday and i was given the ‘S’ paper. Does anybody have any idea what does S paper stand for?

                      Beginning to learn grade 6

                      Yours at which grade?

I only notice aural becoming a problem at grade 5

It is just a title code for the paper signifying the period you take the paper.
