I hope I don't offend anybody here, but I find it disturbing that toddlers as young as 1 year old are given bird nests. My DD had multiple food allergies when young (not including bird's nest, didn't expose her to it). According to the allergy specialist in KKH that she was seeing, bird's nest is the top allergenic food in children in SG. See this website here.

http://www.med.nus.edu.sg/paed/academic/AP_food_allergy.htm
She told me that children generally should not be fed bird's nest, especially children with family history of asthma, eczema. There are studies out there that show that bird's nest can trigger asthma in children.
I personally have asthma, and I was seeing a TCM doc (from China). She told me that in the recent 10-20 years, there is a huge increase in the number of asthmatic children in the Chinese community (HK, SG, China). It has long been suspected in the TCM community that it is due to the increased intake of bird's nest by pregnant women, due to the increased affluence of these societies. And feeding bird's nest to young children also can trigger asthma, although there is no formal large scale clinical studies to prove it at this moment. She also told me that taking bird's nest is only good for dry cough. If you have a lot of phlegm, taking bird's nest will only make it worse.
So my advice is, please seek a TCM opinion first if you want to feed your child bird's nest.

As above. If you’re taking bird’s nest, can you share with me the effect of taking it regularly?

All the bird nest is steamed kind not those bottle one which claim no preservative.
Hi kwokwc,

After prolonged coughing, it is good to boil some tea for nourishing lungs to drink. The ingredients are very simple:
玉竹
白目耳 (buy those that after cooking is still crunchy type, is better)
百合
淮山
南杏
北杏
桔饼

This tea you can also drink when you are coughing and it is good for the lungs. Even if not coughing, can drink once a month for nourishing the lungs.
Thanks for sharing , chi tea that are good to strengthen our lungs :)!

Hi there!

Would like to find out the following:

1. Can uncook bird's nest be consumed after expiry date stated on its packaging?!

2. Can you consume old/expired ginseng, cordyceps and honey liquid tonic in a bottle?!

3. Is it safe to consume expired bottled chicken essence that is still sealed and unopened?!

Appreciate any advice before I throw all of the above away 😞

Thank You!

When I was pregnant with #2, MIL also brewed bird’s nests for me. I did not think it was necessary, so I gave them to my #1 who was around 3 years old then. Some years later while doing a skin allergy test, we were informed that he was allergic to bird’s nests.

Parents who r giving this delicacy to their child n seeing an increase frequency in coughing episode, do consider doing a skin allergy test, just to play safe.

Up to today, I do not give my children this delicacy whenever MIL brews it.

Filial Daughter, it depends where you buy the dried birdnest from. Some vendors did not really make it very dry and hence it will mould more easily. Hence you should check if there’s any mould or unpleasant smell if it has passes the expiry date. How long did it last already?

Hello All

Actually many people know birdnest is good but do not know why it's so good!
If you go to the store, they tell you its so good because it treats this, it treats that right? I think the information below will help many of you to understand birdnest better! I have copied the most important para below and the rest you can read from the link. Hope it helps! 😄

Besides its high protein content, there is content in scientific term called Neuraminic acid, collectively known as Sialic acid (唾液酸), a natural carbonate compound which is able to absorb bacteria and virus. When our body is attack by virus or bacteria, Neuraminic acid is able to absorb these virus or bacteria on our skin first and then performs inhibiting action to prevent spread of the virus or bacteria to other good body cells.

It is also an important substance required in ganglioside (a glycosphingolipid found in the brain and other nervous system tissues) distribution and structure in the brain. Hence, it has been commonly said to contribute to neurological and intellectual advantages in infants.

You can read more in the link below.
