Sorry about the news. Sometimes an anomalous low score can be attributed to sports talents entering the school on a lower score, or the boy's father was an old boy who made significant contributions etc etc etc, I'm not sure. You may want to try to reappeal directly to the principal as mentioned in the previous post, not sure if it'll work.

To all parents of new Victorians:

Congrats on your son entering VS! 😄 Now that the tiresome school applications and posting results are over, how does your son feel about entering the school and about the sec one orientation camp? You can share your feelings on this. 😄 My son is a little afraid because he'll be meeting other boys he had never met before and will be together with them for 24 hours a day for three days. He's used to having his own room, so he would have to get used to sleeping with the boys just centimeters apart under a shelter (there was another picture of 7 boys in a small tent :D). He saw the video of the camp last year, where the boys had to roll in he mud and get mud all over their bodies and PE Attire, so he (unspokenly) hopes to avoid that. 😄 But overall, he's pretty excited about his new school as well as the camp. He likes the water activities and all the confidence building courses and is looking forward to making new friends there. 😄

Btw, I noticed the PE shorts is very short (like those schoolboy shorts in the 60s and 70s :D). Is it supposed to be like that or did we buy a size too small?
:welcome: :welcome: Notice you are new to this forum. Do report to the club.

DS3 is looking forward to the camp. Just tell your DS to let his hair down and enjoy this once in a life time experience. As what it is shared today, first experience and then develop and grow. I love the orientation and was moved almost to tears during the principal's speech esp when the children turned and thanked their parents (some of them even bowed). :rahrah: :rahrah: I'm confident that DS3 is in good hands for the next 4 years and emerge a much better person. Many parents' response was that they were sure they had made the right choice. :celebrate:
Which class is your DS in? DS3 is in 1H.

        Hi parents!

How was your VS orientation yesterday?

Did you manage to go through the CCA booths? My son was at the Infocomm booth.

Hope you have a great time!

Happy New Year to all and hoping all Victorian will have fun-filled VS Edge Camp 2010!!!

        Cheers!!!

I was reading the previous posts on AHS vs VS and Cat High vs VS. Sorry to hear about the result in AHS vs VS. Hope to hear from easymama regarding her decision on Cat High or VS. Of course, we parents of Victorians would hope it is VS. 😄

The orientation was well done. We are looking forward to VS EDGE Camp 2010. We will spend the long weekend buying camping stuff and packing my Victorian's bag. Btw, does anyone know if handphones are allowed during the camp? I would feel safer if my Victorian (new replacement for the word 'DS' 😄 only applicable to the priviledged boys of VS :D) is carrying a handphone, but I also want him to be independent and spend the three days staying and living with the other Victorians, making new friends. I'll be 'lending' my Victorian to the school for three days. They sing, 'Victoria Thy Sons Are We' in the Victorian Anthem, so I'm sure that they'll be well taken of as sons of Victoria. 😄

We gotta go pack now. Happy New Year!

So sad , my son appeal is not successfully . Heard there are <10 vacancy for appeal case . So he will be going to his ist choice school which is Anglican High. Really regret for not being more insisting and go against his will to place Victoria as the ist choice school during selection. With his score, he will for sure be allocated to VS as the cutoff this year is 245 .Now we understand how impt is the choices made during school selection. Probably my son is destined not to be part of the Victorian family . Will go Anglican high tomorrow to get his uniform and textbooks

            😞
Hi wonglc, my DS2 went to VS and DD went to AHS. In my opinion, the academic standards (for maths and science, at least) of both schools are about the same. In terms of student leadership, I feel the students of both schools exhibit similar levels of independence. Among various factors affecting the COPs of schools is the number of students the school takes in. A school with a higher intake will tend to have a lower COP.
One benefit of attending AHS is the free 'workout' the students get - the school is built on a hill so the students do a lot of climbing. Once, the heard the principal claiming that there are no obese students in AHS !

This is very comforting- the free workout . At least i heard some good things about AHS vs VS 😄 . But I tot the in take is almost the same for

all schools. 10 classes of 35 students ? Actually my main concerns is that the school is a SAP school which i think will focus more on languages .BTW ,my son doesn't take higher chinese . He is stronger in both his Maths and Science subjects and I tot VS will be able to bring out this potential in him .Besides , I have long heard about how VS has produced good and successful achievers and tot it is a waste that my son missed the entry . Btw , ur DD still in Anglican? I was there yesterday and felt the building was rather old and run down ...

The buildings are old because it is not a 100% government school so it has to pay for part of its building costs. In spite of that, I do not find the school very agressive in fund raising, just that the proceeds from the concerts of performing arts go to the construction of new indoor sports hall, hence it is the chief gripe of my DD, who is in a performing arts cca. Btw, she is still in the school.
On the other hand, I find the school rather green, and it actually has lots of little corners which I think I would enjoy relaxing in if I were a student. As for the maths and science part, don't worry. AHS actually covered more maths and chemistry in sec 2 than VS . Their expectations for physics is quite high too. All students of AHS are expected to take pure chemistry.

Handphones will be kept by the teachers and will be returned at the end of the camp.

I understand your anxiety of not contacting your DS for 3 days but I think it is an opportunity to let go and let him be independent. The transformation for most Victorian after the 3 days camp is amusing. Experience for yourself and you can share your thoughts with us after that.

You can always monitor the activities from this link http://edge2009.blogspot.com/ (which I mentioned earlier, this blog is setup by Mr Siow, one of the VS PE teacher).

Not sure if they are still updating this blog for this year camp. You can always pen some words of encouragement at the C-box! Already there are some questions posted.

Have any of you managed to get into the blog for the camp? I have tried many times but couldn’t seem to get the right address. Is it edge2010vs.blogspot.com? Thanks.
