Are we looking at the same list. I can see cat high in both category, st hilda n acs in one of the category. ...

There are 2 lists, one under Junior and the other under Open. About 30 Toppers each list.

Thanks dagong99. I know there are 2 lists. I am responding to the earlier posts mentioning that cat high is found in open category and st hilda, acs are not found anywhere.

Yup.. can anyone explain why huh?

        < 96 percentile can also get Certificate of Distinction .... i.e. 16th - 50th position ....

Just4Fun... I think i know why. The sample size is not that big. It should be around 500, not 3000 for your observation to be valid.[/quote]

Yup, i also think so and probably the spread between the scores maybe wide too, say maybe about 45 in the 90 percentile, next 60 in 80 percentile, so that it's possible for < 96% to get Distinction & < 85% to get Credit πŸ˜„

this still does not explain why some who got 98+% are not in the top 30+ list? I still think the sample size is around 3000. More likely to be due to too many identical scores.

Hi dyh, yup if there are pupils who got 98 percentile and not in the top 30, then the sample size is unlikely to be around 500.

However yr explanation of identical score would also depend on how they rank the pupils. For example, the top 4 scores are 95%, 94%, 94% and 93%.
The pupil who scored 95% would be ranked 1st, the 2 with 94 would be ranked 2nd, then what about the student with 93%, would the child be ranked 3rd or 4th? If 4th, then the top 150 scorers can only be matched with ard 150- 200 pupils. Am i right to say that? In that case, it would not explain the percentile. Hope I am talking sense. πŸ™‚

              Hi dyh,

Thank you so much. I think you have solved the mystery. There are many identical scores and based on the scenario i have posted earlier, the 4th student with 93% is likely to be ranked 3rd not 4th. Am I right? So although there are top 50 positions, there are more than 50 students filling the positions, affecting the percentile accordingly.
Thank you so much for yr explanation. I have been trying to figure out why.

Haha, with all the posts trying to figure out on the percentile, I have hit 1000 posts... haha :rahrah: And now I am a KiasuGrandmaster... LOL.. :rotflmao:

Assuming the lowest percentile for getting credit in this round is 85 % ( this is only assumption hor), then no of students taking this exam shd be 800… Since 120th position rep top 85%. This is quite possible as we do not expect all p5 students taking this… Most likely all the geppers and the top mainstream classes. So I think 800 to 1000 total intake is fairly reasonable.

But if dyh knows of a child who is in the 98 percentile but not in the top 30 list, then the sample size cannot be 1000.

Hi, It is possible to have all the kids from percentile 85% to 98% to be ranked between 51 and 120 if many have identical raw scores.

                      Hi dyh,

May I know whether the child who scored 98 percentile gets to the second round. I think the list of top scorers may not be the top 30 positions. It may be the top 5 positions taken up by 30s pupils due to identical score. So if the rule is students who are in the top 50 positions get into the second round, then that child has high chance of getting in. Maybe the child shld check with the teacher.

Hi, according to my ds, 2 or 3 people got above 98 percentile but no second round invitation.
