      VitoRelax:
Nanyang IP students transfer to HCI to do A level at Year 5 & 6 ?

Yes that's right. Unless they fail so badly to be kicked out...

          Hi,

NYGH CCA selection is next week, appreaciate if anyone could share about NYGH Shooting Club?
From what I understand most CCAs in Sec sch are mostly 2 days per week, but from the CCA booklet, Shooting club requires 3 days!! May be is for the school team?
Does the student need to have good eye sight?

How about Band or Chinese Orchestra? Are the training intensive? Heard near SYF will be very busy.

Don't dare to consider Uniform Group cos heard very \"siong\" !

          Thanks !

Usually most sports CCA in top schools will train very hard (sometimes every day) before competition. After competition, they may relax a bit (eg. once a week)

Come SYF/ Sports Season, training is pretty much everyday or at least 3-4 times a week. Otherwise, it’s probably 2 - 3 times a week. I don’t recall a Sports/ PA group training only once a week, even after competitions. They may break for a while, then it’s back to to 2 - 3 times.

CO and Band can be quite busy during concert or SYF season, because you have sectionals and combined practice. They also have lunch and morning practices closer to competition.

There’s no "recreational" team for Sports CCAs. Everyone trains to represent the school in competitions. Whether you actually get selected to the team eventually is another question. (They might have changed their policy recently though)

Haha I was from Guides. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite like the activities. It’s probably the mildest of the 3 UGs, physically at least. SJAB and NPCC can be quite "shiong", the seniors don’t mince their words (I’ve heard that their juniors actually cried). It depends on the individual though; the bonding in UGs is typically very strong and I have friends who really love it.

Hmm not sure about shooting. My shooter friends wore spectacles though. I would suggest your daughter go for the CCA exhibition and enquire about CCAs she’s interested in! The best people to ask are really the seniors.

                  Hi N3SKiasu,

I think Micko07 has given very good advice. Go for the CCA fair and you will have a better understanding but you have to ask the right questions to find a good fit.

I was from CO, but almost 20 years ago. It was 2X practices per week, 2pm-5pm then and every holiday (Jun & Dec), the hours will be extended to 9am-5pm, pretty much like reporting for work. 😄 And if there was any major performance or SYF competition, the practices might be extended to 3-4X a week.

On top of that, like learning any musical instrument, you have to practise at home. And depending on the instrument you choose, you may have to lug it to and fro the school. In our days, for most of the instruments, we could buy it through the school's vendor and leave it at home. But at times, you may be seconded to other instruments (like in my case), and you will have to borrow the school's. I remember every Tues & Fri were a logistics nightmare for me.

In a nutshell, physically not as straining as UGs but hours much longer, with the home practices. Pretty time consuming but satisfying as you will learn to play an instrument, appreciate Chinese music, and best of all, hear the applause on stage. And last but not least, good CCA score.

CCAs are very impt as it helps to shape part of your sec sch life, so choose wisely.

                    Hi micko07/pummanuel/kunikokatodesu,

Sorry was busy last few days and unable to reply. Thanks for sharing the info. Will keep these in mind. Btw my DD is in NYGH not me (i am an old aunite and KS mom) 😄 I am so glad that u gals came to share about NY! The info is certainly helpful for parents like us.

The CCA selection is on-going now. My DD came back these few days and told me about interesting CCA to select, I believe it will be a hard choice for her cos her interest shifted each day and now considering Track & Field! gosh the hot sun....

Agreed that CCA is an important part of Sec life cos a recent chat with friend and we realised that we remembered the CCAs but not what we have studied in Sec sch! We will consider carefully as it is not allowed to simply withdraw from it if you regret after that.

                      hi,

My gal’s in P6 thinking of NYGH next yr. Wonder if it is really $ here, $ there (as indicated by someone in this forum) ? are the students mainly from the rich families?
How big is the class size ? Is the structure similar to HCI ie. GEP and AMOPS platinum in one group? Saw in Duman High forum that sec 1 got 2 special classes (GEP and top PSLE scorers) that have smaller class size ? Malay is compulsory for sec 1 and 2 ? Normal school days end abt what time and Girl guides CCA - how many times per week ?
                      thanks.

NYGH has a good history of bilingualism. While RGS girls are very smart and are well capable of high standard chinese, I suspect the general environment there is still subconsciuosly bias and most of the students speak English there. NYGH is certainly a good choice.

                        Hi, totally agreed!

When the role of China and US changed and China become a consumption-based economy, the whole world will have to, generally, tilt towards chinese language speaking as everybody have to sell things or provide services to them. Even though China has registered spectacular growth in the past two decades, it has only now truly turned to become to true net consumptor and this is significant.
