In my opinion, it will not be effective tuition. I’m one of those ignorant moms who sent my kid to a centre like that in 2012. The centre has two pillars of teaching- a worksheet experience and a classroom experience. It was an experience, for sure. A terrible experience X 2. It should have dawn on me that it can’t work as the duration is just too short. Not exactly cheap at about $35 an hour. Not taught by former school teachers. At best, it’s for p1s. My child was in p3 and couldn’t do some questions even after the tutor has taught. He couldn’t ask as the tutor was teaching another level. And you know, model-drawing was more complex in p3. So seriously, although this centre my child attended has a "Seriously" in their name, all mothers should seriously have second thoughts. Otherwise, not only is money wasted, but time wasted too. This year, in my desperation, i looked into kiasu forum and read good reviews about some centres/tutors. I found a good ex-teacher and my child’s model-drawing etc is so much stronger now.

To me , the tutor must be able to deliver regardless of her qualification . We often heard students complaining that the school teachers can t teach well , hence students cannot understand n therefore need to go for tutition .

More importantly , for the $ to be well spent, Parents , students n tutor must work together to see the result.

This will definitely not work out! What do you want your child to achieve at the end of the lesson? Save the money instead and put into solid tuition areas

This is highly possible. The essence of education today is no longer knowledge/content based but skills based. One important skill is self learning. This is why the tutor could just show the child one example and get the child to try the other questions on his or her own and ask questions when in doubts. Kumon advocates self learning.

It does not do the child any good if you get a tutor to sit beside the child when the child attempts all the questions as this may lead to the child’s dependence on the tutor. 1-1 tuition is good for weak students. What most students need is to have someone to guide them when they are in doubts.

alng is a teacher ? She must be a very good teacher.

A good teacher teaches a student 'how to catch fish'.
A good teacher does not 'give the student a fish when the student asks for one'. Students who have learnt how to catch fish will not go hungry for a life time.

A good teacher teaches skills to handle different subjects , topics.
              A good teacher teaches strategies.
A good teacher can pass on these skills and strategies to many students at the same time.

With skills and strategies, students become strong, independent, creative learners.

These skills and strategies are especially important to students going for higher/tertiary education later. At higher learning, you have to digest numerous super thick reference materials. That's why many students who fair well for primary and secondary cannot do well when they go JC's and Universities.

It is a good advantage to equip students with skills and strategies for learning. A teacher that teaches skills and strategies is hard to come by.
alng must be a very good teacher !!! :udawoman:

I agree with you. Not being in a typical classroom type of enrichment means each child can progress at his own pace, and not be constrained by the general pace of the class.

If can progress at own pace, most likely donch need tuition in the first place 😆
these are the most sought after tutees!

I personally do not believe in 1-1 tuition unless the child is very weak and requires 1-1 coaching. Enrichment courses to challenge the child is a different story. Most of the time, the child needs some help in their school work so if there is someone (a parent, a sibling or a cousin etc) who could help when needs arise, that would be the best

As my dd is in upper secondary and the content of her school work is beyond us now, I do get tutors to provide help to my dd on an ad-hoc basis whenever my dd needs help. The help is irregular and need not be face to face. The help can be done via skype or whatsapp. As the income is not regular, not many tutors want to take up such last minutes assignments.

I think it is possible as long as the tutor is experienced.
