I have some more to add:

      1. Teachers asking other teachers to step into their class to explain.
      2. Teachers who did not provide solutions. They just marked it wrong.
      3. Teachers who wrote the solutions down but could not explain properly.
      4. Teachers who avoided the questions from students

I heard this from my own students. I couldn’t believe what they told me.
      Which one is worse?

Are we just listening to one side of the stories??

My P6 DD has tons of homework everyday & she sleeps past 11pm everyday. On days past 12midnight cos of her tuition.
I felt the teacher is crazy but the teacher claims the amount does not require her to sleep so late everyday. So eventually I found out

        a) crazy teacher - my Dd would write very detailed article reviews (vocab list, summary, opinion) that takes her at least 1.5hours to complete.

        b) ok teacher - some of her classmates can sleep at 10.30pm, they complete their article reviews in 30-45mins (submitting shorter summary, less Vocab, little opinion). They found their schoolwork manageable

        c) lousy teacher who dun teach - i spoke to a mommy who complaint that her son is soooo relaxed. Able to complete some of his homework in school & have time to watch tv at home. But when I check with my dd, some of these boys would secretly do their homework while the teacher is teaching, despite being scolded when discovered. So should the teacher be spending time catching these students one by one or focus on teaching to those who listen?

All under the same teacher but each of us rate & view the teacher sooo differently......aren't we all jumping into conclusion? I seriously think our own child has a part to play as well, not just the teacher.

          Good sharing!

When I chatted with a mum whose child was in the same class as mine, both of us were very surprised with the different impression of the workload - her ds worked past midnight almost every day, while I was wondering why my ds didn't seem to have much homework at all, he took afternoon naps and slept at about 10:00 to 10:30pm.

My daughter went to British Council in Napier Rd to prep herself for P1. Her teacher Pauline called me into e class and told her to read aloud some words on a piece of paper in front of her classmates and myself. Out of 10 words she is able to pronounce 7 right. Her teacher Pauline looked at me and went… what’s the point coming to class wearing a nice dress and looking all pretty but can’t read? I was dumbfounded. My 6 year old was so embarrassed tt she cried in front of her classmates. We never went back. Bad teachers are everywhere. The lucky ones won’t get to meet em.

Sorry to hear about your gal's bad experience.
But I'm sure good teachers are everywhere too. Probably all of us have met our fair share of bad/lousy/average/good teachers along the way.
If one has only met bad teachers throughout, this person must be really unlucky..........

There are good teachers…as in passionate, dedicated, responsible and willing to go that extra mile for weak students…unfortunately, there are not many of them around. Some reasons could be:

                1) those qualities were there when teachers first started, but fizzled out after some years.
                2) teachers are too tired and given non-core stuff.
                3) teachers who joined teaching bcos they see as iron rice bowl
                4) moonlighting earns better…being a school teacher is to know what is happening and command high fees.

If a teacher has always been allocated to top few classes, he/she doesn’t have to repeat and repeat bcos students are able to grasp faster…and so teacher can afford to be lax…with this attitude, the weaker classes will naturally suffer if this kind of teacher is allocated to teach them.

Remember saying this before…friend’s son in a popular primary school, but in weak class, had this teacher who looked down on students…and very obvious with hurtful words. Even friend herself had to put up with those words during PTM.

Which child doesn’t want to be in top few classes? Which person doesn’t want to look pretty/handsome?

I am sorry to hear about this public humiliation, to you and your child. I would definitely raised this issue with British Council and get my money back at least, if not demand for apology and compensation for such rude treatment from an utterly unprofessional teacher!

Please tell your dd, she managed 7 out of 10, well past the average, it is not fair to say she can't read! And the reason she go to class is to improve herself and learn more. This teacher is just one bad example and there are many more good teachers that she can learn from.

How can a teacher be so mean to a child? That's utterly insensitive
The poor little girl would be traumatized. Please tell your daughter she CAN read. 7/10 is not bad...furthermore, she should be applauded for having the courage to read in front of the class.

Last yr, i signed up my ds for few days science enrichment program at Starquest.

There were lots of caucasian children in the class n they were quite mischievous. My ds was being bullied on the first lesson. When i spoke to the teacher, she said it is a norm, they r their regular students. She claimed my ds not used to the environment n she sided the boy,by saying that:"It’s alright u splashed water on him bcoz u wanna befrd him, right?"

                      luckily,it was only a 2days program.

I agree with Janet. This is just not right. A kid goes for the lessons to learn. If she already knows, what on earth is the parent paying for?
