taking bus 81 to kovan then change train to potong pasir should be the right way from Pasir Ris. But do take note that Bus 81's frequency is about 10 to 15 mins. I hate to take this bus but has to do so to go to Kovan hence she must not miss the bus in the morning otherwise has to wait quite long for the next bus. It is only 6 min train ride to Potong pasir from Kovan. It will take at least another 10 to 15 mins walk into Cedar from the train station, passing by the pte properties... Good school to go to and it is new.....

For those of you staying in Pasir Ris where 81 plies, do you have 53? If you do, can also consider taking 53 from Pasir Ris and alight at Serangoon MRT and from there, it is definitely nearer to hop onto the train bound for Potong Pasir. Besides, I think 53 is quite frequent especially in the mornings. I think between the 2, 53 is more frequent than 81.

Hopefully the circle line is ready by next year and the people staying in the east can change train at Paya Lebar to Serangoon ,then to Potong Pasir. this will surely help to save some travel time ..http://www.lta.gov.sg/projects/proj_rail_ccl.htm

Only a few more days to get the notebooks for 1-to-1 computing programme. What are the rest of students/parents getting? I look at the options but cannot decide. hahaha

The salesman at Cedar told me the Acer Aspire One Slim was popular because it's the bang for the buck but I have bad experience with Atom processor because it was really slow. Considering the other Aspire model because it comes with Windows 7 and I heard it's fast but not sure if Acer notebook can last 4 years.

The Atom processor is more than sufficient for what the kids have to do. The beauty of netbook is in the size, weight, and much longer battery life.

actually the girls only need to bring their laptop in mid Feb. there is still time to look around.
From my experience, Acer gives lots of problems whether it is Atom or not.
You may want to look at Asus.
Agree that Atom (netBk) is good enough for the girls because of the size and weight. The girls have to lug it to school everyday.
Didn't get a chance to see the laptops on 23 Dec. Besides Acer, was there any other brand?

Agree with CKS amd Zeemimi. I did some research and discussion with my friends whose kids use notebook in sec schools. So I am placing my priorities (in descending order) as

            1) weight
            2) ruggedness
            3) cost
            4) performance

I went to shop around today and found out that there is a new series of CPU - SU type. ASUS, ACER, HP and IBM have various model with this CPU. Because they are low voltage CPU, the battery power can last longer and somehow, they are also lighter at about 1.48 kg - 1.6+ kg versus those 2 kg onwards for most of the existing notebooks except for Atom etc.

So you may want to consider these newer models
            Lenovo U330 - ~$
Lenovo U350 - ~$999 (no freebies, from Matrix), $1399 (freebies)
Lenovo U350 - $1099 (some freebies, from PC Connect)
            HP dm1-1016tu - ~$1299 (HP Online)

Not too good impression of Lenovo 'cos had a lot of problems with their laptops. The HP looks good though but pricey compared to netbooks.

For cheaper (probably half the price of the HP) and lighter alternative, may want to see http://eeepc.asus.com/global/products.html. See their comparison chart at http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm,

              Interested in the 1005HA.

If you google \"eee pc 1005ha\", it has pretty decent reviews by cnet, zdnet, etc.

Too bad we miised the last C3 in Dec. The next computer IT show won't come till mid March which will be too late. And we realised today that there was an eeepc 1005HA offer which just ended in Dec 31 2009! *argh*

Hoping that the computer roadshow in school will carry 1005HA at a good buy.

Anyone interested in the same model? If we can bulk buy, can probably get a good discount. Below $600.

To me, the most important criteria is battery life. No point having a super-duper fast machine if you have to keep looking for a power point everywhere you go.

Yeah, you are right. I mentioned it but didnt include in list. my bad. Anyway, my DD said no small screen for her coz she doesnt want to squint her eyes. So
                  1) Screen size >12\"
                  2) weight (<2 kg)
                  3) ruggedness (hoping that it will last 4 years)
                  4) Battery life
                  5) cost (<1.2k)
                  6) performance

Looks like netbooks are out of my list and I have to look at the next range CULVs.

For those keen on ULV notebooks, I was told that ASUS is releasing an "improved" series of the current UL series next 1-2 weeks.

We checked out Crescent yesterday just to take a look at the school since it wasn't the open house.
                      Great.
                      My girl was completely \"defeated\".
She said we've to travel one hour plus and we've asked a student there about the JC rate. She replied it wasn't 100% but 65.
She was willing to go to Cedar.
I heaved a sigh of relief.
And she completely removed Crescent from the 6 choices.
                      šŸ˜‰
In the end her choices were(accordingly): Cedar, Anglican, St. Nicholas, TKGS, TK Sec, Chung Cheng Main.
I'm quite happy with her choices.
                      šŸ˜„
Actually there was another reason why she chose Cedar: The immersion programme includes her cousin's daughter's(my girl's dad is the youngest in his family so...) school.

Thanks all the parents once again!
                      :salute:
This is totally wrong. Crescent has 100% admission into JC for the past 3 years. It has NEVER been 65%. In fact, Crescent even got the Value-added award, which meant that the students entered crescent with a score if 245, but when they graduate, their scores are better than those who graduated from other schools whose psle cop was 250.

Also, Cedar is more towards sports. Crescent has WIIs and absolutely great facilities. the teachers are even willing to stay back past their worktime to conduct consultations with students.

Life at crescent is also not totally about work. they have many outside classrooms activities and they even use their computers and dataloggers to conduct experiments. To be honest, I think your daughter will lose out by choosing cedar, because i know a girl from crescent and she entered crescent with a psle cop of 244 but graduated with an L1R5 of 5. Most of crescent's students graduate with good o-level scores, average would be L1R5 of 6, which means all subjects A1.

I don't think it is fair to say that their daughter is losing out by choosing Cedar. I study at Cedar and it is great. Yes, we are more inclined to sports, but this year, our school also has a Cedar Arts Fest which showcases our performing arts CCAs talents. In terms of facilities, other than having many sports halls, basketball courts, our own 400m track and many others, Cedar also has numerous dance studios, a theatrette, etc.. My school also has a decent O level result performance, just that some of our students prefer to choose Poly over JC, which isn't uncommon. I know students from Raffles and Nanyang that choose Poly over JC as well.

There's also a vibrant community here. The school pride is amazing. Cedar is not just about studying, it's about having fun and learning to be confident as well.
