Cedar Girls Secondary School

naminator:
Thanks, naminator.Hi all
I'm a Secondary 2 pupil in CGSS next year. My class has also been chosen to do the 1-to-1 computing. The school aims to get feedback on the spot during classes. ...
@heutistmeintag - if your daughter does go to the school, I can help her on the way home if she needs it, as I also live in Pasir Ris.
About the 1-to-1 computing, I have a notebook now shared by a few people in the family and is wondering if I should get another one for her or we accommodate her schedule. Do you have any idea how often would the notebook be used? If everyday, then I think I have no choice but to buy her another notebook. Which model do you recommend?
On transport, I have put her on school bus 1-way in the mornings and she will return on her own. We are \"practising\" the return route within these few days. lol
Anyway, I am more concerned how she will adapt to the new environment e..g choosing CCA, HMT, coping with her studies (need tution?). If you dont mind, any advice from you on these? -
Only a few more days to get the notebooks for 1-to-1 computing programme. What are the rest of students/parents getting? I look at the options but cannot decide. hahaha
The salesman at Cedar told me the Acer Aspire One Slim was popular because it’s the bang for the buck but I have bad experience with Atom processor because it was really slow. Considering the other Aspire model because it comes with Windows 7 and I heard it’s fast but not sure if Acer notebook can last 4 years. -

The Atom processor is more than sufficient for what the kids have to do. The beauty of netbook is in the size, weight, and much longer battery life.Only a few more days to get the notebooks for 1-to-1 computing programme. What are the rest of students/parents getting? taking bus 81 to kovan then change train to potong pasir should be the right way from Pasir Ris. But do take note that Bus 81’s frequency is about 10 to 15 mins. I hate to take this bus but has to do so to go to Kovan hence she must not miss the bus in the morning otherwise has to wait quite long for the next bus. It is only 6 min train ride to Potong pasir from Kovan. It will take at least another 10 to 15 mins walk into Cedar from the train station, passing by the pte properties… Good school to go to and it is new…

For those of you staying in Pasir Ris where 81 plies, do you have 53? If you do, can also consider taking 53 from Pasir Ris and alight at Serangoon MRT and from there, it is definitely nearer to hop onto the train bound for Potong Pasir. Besides, I think 53 is quite frequent especially in the mornings. I think between the 2, 53 is more frequent than 81. -
Hopefully the circle line is ready by next year and the people staying in the east can change train at Paya Lebar to Serangoon ,then to Potong Pasir. this will surely help to save some travel time ..http://www.lta.gov.sg/projects/proj_rail_ccl.htm

actually the girls only need to bring their laptop in mid Feb. there is still time to look around.

From my experience, Acer gives lots of problems whether it is Atom or not.
You may want to look at Asus.
Agree that Atom (netBk) is good enough for the girls because of the size and weight. The girls have to lug it to school everyday.
Didn't get a chance to see the laptops on 23 Dec. Besides Acer, was there any other brand? -
Agree with CKS amd Zeemimi. I did some research and discussion with my friends whose kids use notebook in sec schools. So I am placing my priorities (in descending order) as
1) weight
2) ruggedness
3) cost
4) performance
I went to shop around today and found out that there is a new series of CPU - SU type. ASUS, ACER, HP and IBM have various model with this CPU. Because they are low voltage CPU, the battery power can last longer and somehow, they are also lighter at about 1.48 kg - 1.6+ kg versus those 2 kg onwards for most of the existing notebooks except for Atom etc.
So you may want to consider these newer models
Lenovo U330 - ~$
Lenovo U350 - ~$999 (no freebies, from Matrix), $1399 (freebies)
Lenovo U350 - $1099 (some freebies, from PC Connect)
HP dm1-1016tu - ~$1299 (HP Online)

Not too good impression of Lenovo 'cos had a lot of problems with their laptops. The HP looks good though but pricey compared to netbooks.
For cheaper (probably half the price of the HP) and lighter alternative, may want to see http://eeepc.asus.com/global/products.html. See their comparison chart at http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm,
Interested in the 1005HA.
If you google \"eee pc 1005ha\", it has pretty decent reviews by cnet, zdnet, etc.
Too bad we miised the last C3 in Dec. The next computer IT show won't come till mid March which will be too late. And we realised today that there was an eeepc 1005HA offer which just ended in Dec 31 2009! *argh*
Hoping that the computer roadshow in school will carry 1005HA at a good buy.
Anyone interested in the same model? If we can bulk buy, can probably get a good discount. Below $600. -

To me, the most important criteria is battery life. No point having a super-duper fast machine if you have to keep looking for a power point everywhere you go.... So I am placing my priorities (in descending order) as
1) weight
2) ruggedness
3) cost
4) performance...
