Q&A - P1 Chinese

For reading skills, I am trying to find Chinese books for dd that children of her age would actually find interesting to read.


For English, there is Geronimo Stilton, story books about princesses, aliens, monsters, ghosts etc. Can anyone recommend any Chinese equivalent? I don't even care if they are comics. Anything that will interest a P1 kid enough to actually want to read it will do.

I was told there is Chinese version of Geronimo Stilton.

I was told there is Chinese version of Geronimo Stilton.

For p1 student, i would recommended to get a book with Han Yu pin yin unless your child is very strong in Chinese. Otherwise, your child will lose interest with the book.

When my ds1 was in p1, he can't even read 1 single Chinese character bec I am Chinese illiterate and he only attended 1/2 yr of K2. Then I stumbled on tamarind's blog. The 1st thing that I must do is to make my ds pick up a Chinese book. It doesn't matter whether he can read the book or not. I
started off buying pic books with only 1 sentence. My ds really liked the pic in the books. So I told him if he wants to know what is the book about, then he must learn Chinese. So slowly he started to pick up and I ended up
buying more n more cl books as he progressed. Thanks to tamarind, my ds is in the top hcl class. During ptm, his cl teacher told me he is the 4th highest for cl ca1. Because of tamarind :salute: my ds no longer dislikes

good evening need your help here, my dd is in primary 1 bridging class… and the class schedule says there are assessments from week 5 to week 8 for English, Math and Chinese…


for Chinese this is what is scheduled
- Spelling
-Oral Reading

are they going to be assessed like everyone else in the mainstream or have to revise her old tingxie list (as they will be tested against that list)??

I subscribed to iflash and is considering to subscribe to koolbits too… to practice her oral reading… and also get her tutor to help assess her… (I don’t speak Chinese at all)…

is there anything else I could do to help my dd at least get a decent mark on spelling and oral reading (enough not to demotivate her and lose interest on Chinese)?

My son is going p1 next year. We will enrol him into a singapore school in July/August this year but he won’t be able to start school in January as the family will be away for a year. I am worried about his Chinese cos he’s already quite bad in the language and he won’t be able to receive the foundation in p1 next year.

I have to teach him chinese myself while overseas and would like to ask experienced parents for recommendations on books/enrichment materials that would help in his Chinese in p1. So far, I only thought of bringing the p1 Chinese textbook and hanyu pinyin materials. Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance!

You might want to bring some oral, listening comprehension guide along. In P1, students will be reviewed based on their oral and listening comprehension skill. Do we need to prepare script for the Chinese Oral if the school has pre-determine some questions?

yes, there are books/materials/teacher's guide (with or without CDs) which provides \"model\" prompt questions (questions that teacher's ask to prompt the child to start talking or steer them in the right topic) and \"model\" answers....


applies to both listening comprehension and picture discussion...

my daughter who is non-chinese CANNOT even form a sentence in chinese in the beginning of the year.. scored 85% on her listening comprehension assessment..with help from this..

Can any KSparents advise me how do I use the flashcards to teach DS?


My DS has minimal interest to Chinese. And he doesn’t remember most Chinese characters & his vocabulary is limited.

Seldom communicate in Chinese.
