Yes, its confirmed that more than 2/3 (about 70+%) of the boys in RI take Triple Sciences and more than 8 subjects..

I bought this book too. I get dd to read the worked examples, try to understand the concepts involved, then do the questions. Her school uses On Sponge and A-Start Maths.

I bought PSLE Science A* Achievers' Guided Topical Challenge (by Educational Publishing House Pte Ltd) because they give good explanations on what teachers look for in marking the open ended questions. However, I take some of their suggested answers with a pinch of salt. For example, they suggested that a plastic sheet is transparent, but dd put it as translucent. I think it may be either. For such questions, I explain the rational, but do not insist that she memorises the answer. I think its much more important to understand the underlying concepts, than to try to second guess the examiners' answer.

the other thing you might want to take note is that they usually combine ratio and fractions in a single question, (that is what is notice from my girl school work), so this 2 topics need to know at finger tips. if you take a look at the above mentioned book, you will know.

Hi 711 mom,

It depends on what you want. I get science guides as a reference for scientific concepts that the syllabus expects the kids to know. While I do use science workbooks, I also take some of their answers with a pinch of salt. On the other hand, while I want dd to know the scientific concepts, I do not emphasize on the marks obtained. I do not want dd to memorise answers to questions just to get full marks. It defeats the purpose of education.
To me, science is not absolute - and therein lies its beauty. Many of the scientific theories upon which scientific principles are based are just that - theories. In fact, many ancient philosophers proposed theories that are the basis of scientific principles today. The scientific method test and retest these "principles", to have them "proved" over and over again. So what we may take as absolute scientific "truth" today may be redefined or even be proven wrong in future - if evidence can be found to disprove it. And that’s where the beauty in science lies. We do not know where the boundaries in science lies. We do not know everything there is to know. There is still scope for our children to discover new principles, to disprove old assumptions, to boldy go where nobody has been before.

Which leads on to the question of why PSLE is marked on such rigid guidelines - assuming they are marked rigidly. It, quite wrongly, narrows the focus and scope of the child’s thinking.
