My kid's tutor got us 17 chinese assessment books ..initially I was shocked but I notice that my girl did those assessment on daily basis..last time I had a hard time her to complete even 1 chapter of an assessment books. ..and some of the assessments drills on different section....I need my girl to practise more on her Chinese..as she has weak foundation in that language..

      17?? that r a lot....did she asked u b4 buying??

i bot a lot of books for my kid too...he is P3,i even hv bot P3 or some compo guide books which can be used up to PSLE

No..she didn't but she said I can choose not to take those which I dont want. I took all instead since some are focusing on different areas. I also notice that she will go back to the previous chapters weekly..using different books, in a way, it helps my daughter to recap, otherwise she will not revise on her own.
My hubby bought 8 Maths assessment books for my other daughter as we realise that she needs different exposures for different topics. Certain books are good at challenging questions, some are good at concept training. I had also abt 8 books for Science alone.I guess so long as the usage are effective, the quantity does not matter.

        Side track a bit...

I believe u've read some of my posts with regarding to my son current tutor.I've no choice but to put up with her coz i've not found a replacement.

I would like to seek some opinion fr u...

I find her a bit disorganized, papers everywhere.I've to organize everything, keep all the worksheets, books.I even summarized her notes(coz all scattered ard)n got her to revise wf my son.

I feel my son basic writing skills is not up to standard(the flow, sentence structure, grammar, tenses).I suggested her to work on the basic first(she did, only on introduction). She kept getting my son to practise writing, but no structure to follow...To me,this is very \"reactive\".

I asked her if the teacher would penalize for wrong grammar used, she said the grammar not impt, impt is the content n flow.

She oso mentioned planning is not necessary(last time said muz plan),just straight away write based on Problem & Resolution. But i feel it is necessary(simple planning) since my son does not hv good logical thinking.

She has introduced quite a number of creative phrases(some r quite \"chim\" but i doubt my son knows how to apply it.

my DH commented if the \"basic\"writing is not there, how to be \"creative\"writing? 🀷

        hi ng2010,
my son is in P3....I took 3days to summarize all her notes...showed her the summary, she said very good, even asked if she could borrow n make copy 🀷 DH said u pay her,but doing her job.bo bian le,she keeps saying no guidelines,so i've come up something for ds to refer to when he does the compo.I shld charge her for copyrights.

She showed me some of common phrases but didn't give the list-her reason, worried it'll confuse him.Ok,i agree. But later, she asked me to go thru the whole lists of phrases(expression, feelings) from a reference book that i bot 🀷 :?

It is apparent that she is a bad tutor. No need to waste time and money on her any longer. It's time to get a better tutor.

How do your kids feel about it? My kids have told me how thankful they are that I don't buy many such books for them!

They are quite okay as I do not ask them to all the assessment books..only selective questions..most of the time we will pick topics (Maths and Sci) that they are weak in and will also do the assessments/topical test part. For Languages, I leave it to the tutors who will eventually get them to complete the whole books by end of the year.

I think you should drop her asap and put the time and money elsewhere. Even if it is watching Ironman 3, the rewards will be greater. At least your son and you will have a good bonding time. (maybe you can bribe him to do an essay for you the way you want in return.)

You can either source for alternative, or you can ask your son if he wants to work with you (I think you know what you want and what needs to be done - you're better than the tutor!!) and the money saved can be put towards other (nicer) things. Of course, he must agree to listen and not complain for the two hours with you. Just a suggestion. πŸ˜„

u know the problem! u gotta the catch.Yes,my ds only listens to outsider.I always tell him,if he listens to me,i could hv saved a lot $$ in tuition, and bring him go tour or buy his fav toys.Told him million of times,he is PAP,verbally agrees but no execution.

while i agree to the tutor that teacher/tutor n parents shld work hand in hand to help the child,i couldn't stand her tone.Towards end of the lesson, she'll say,\"come come, there r also homework for u,pls help him to do this n that.\"

I agree with ammonite. I would have sacked this tutor long, long ago. If you can 'change hats' for an hour at a time and coach your son yourself, that may be an idea. THe benefit of the DIY approach is that you don't need to do a full hour - for my kids, once they get it, we stop. If not, a group situation may be better?
yes,now i am considering group tuition.Reason of private tuition is more of its convenience n time saving in traveling. No doubt private tuition provides more tailor made coaching,i find there is no structure.I am not sure, perhaps my expectation is wrong.

i got her thru schtutor agent....no contract or nothing....probably does not nid to give notice....

how shld i tell her that i like to stop tuition?

What if he has to pay for tuition himself? Choose between self funded tuition outside or mummy's free tuition. You may get an interesting reaction. like  ... πŸ˜“ ... ... :scared:

Mummy is always good and generous, but mummy needs a holiday. She will like to save up for a trip to pamper herself and recharge. The tuition money will add up just nice to that. Anyway mummy already has her degree, so junior is really studying only for himself, not for mum.

I tell my children I will only pay for what I cannot teach. If I can teach it but they won't listen, I am perfectly happy to source for them and take them there, BUT they pay themselves. Their choice.

Remember, mummy is good and reasonable.

There are good personal tutors around. The Answer sounds like a great one to me!!

Just tell her it is not working out, or you feel that your child needs a different style/peers for structure and motivation. She is lucky to have lasted this long with you, no need to feel bad.

Vinegar, no need to feel bad to sack the tutor. It's your rights. You can sack the tutor via SMS if you do not want to face her. Ask for her bank account number and transfer the money to her.
It's almost impossible to get a full time experience tutor at this time of the year. Go to a tuition center. Beats trying your luck with the private tutors. The experience tutors can get students at the snap of their fingers. Believe it or not!
