The use of 'You' in Sentences

Ytd, my younger boy did not hv afternoon supplementary class, supposed to reach home around 2pm. By 2.30pm he is nowhere to be seen.

#1 possibility: he played soccer at school and forgot about the time

#2 possibility: the teacher decided to hv supplementary class

#3 possibility: there is an accident

#4 possibility: he is kidnapped

When he finally appeared at the doorstep, I held it all inside me and calmly asked: why so late?

Turned out he ran errands for the FT.

How should we give a compliment when someone smelled nice???

Ok, the guy that I mentioned about who is fond of using 你 and 你们 is this － come to think of it, the tone should sound pretty much the same if spoken in English, and it goes like this:


\"That day, I went to this place and saw this man. He said this \"........!!!\" You don't have to say this kind of thing right? How can you say this to me? I was only xxx, why you all like to talk like this...\"

And he goes on complaining but using 'You' instead of 'he'. Notice how he would switch from the 3rd person (he) to 'you'? If another person joins in in the middle of the conversation, he/she would think he is having an argument with the listener!

Usually the listener will try to pacify him to make him feel less agitated, possibly giving benefit of doubt to the other person for saying something like this. But in the end, the conversation would end up with a twist - with the complainer against the listeners \"Why you all so against me?\"

See what I am trying to say? I am linking this behaviour to the inappropriate use of the word 'You' as it has a tendency to invite argument. Am I making sense to draw such a conclusion?

Yes! Thanks for the reminder. \"We\" is an excellent word to use. It's connotes camaraderie, shared objectives, joys or miseries. I'll start using \"we\" on my kids.

For me using 'we' was not a deliberate or conscious choice. Just that I tend to use it especially when following up on stuff that needs to be done. And I just realised that, with this topic of using 'you'. Ha.

Maybe like Chief is thinking of using more 'we' I should try to use more 'you' with my kiddos and see what happens. So far kiddos have no issues knowing that homework as well as chores assigned to them is their responsibility. But if being more specific in my following up is more effective, I am all for it.

This confirms my observation that many Singaporeans (myself included) have quite poor skills when it comes to accepting compliments or gifts from others.

Asians are generally shy when they receive compliments...angmohs will accept with a 'thank you'...different culture perhaps. Think I read this article before. For Asians, we would be thinking of something to reply instead of a thank you...even for a compliment like, 'you look nice'.
