In a hall, 1/3 of the pupils were lined up in 7 long rows and 4/9 of the pupils were lined up in 12 short rows. The rest of the pupils were seated on the stage. Each long row had 10 more pupils than each short row.


Q: How many pupils were lined up in rows and what is the fraction of pupils seated on the stage ?

Fraction of pupils seated on stage = 1-1/3-4/9 = 2/9

1/3 of pupils = 3/9 of pupils
7 long rows = 7 short rows + 7 x 10 = 7 short rows + 70
7 short rows + 70 --> 3/9 of pupils

4/9 of pupils in 12 short rows
12 short rows --> 4/9 of pupils
9 short rows --> 3/9 of pupils

so, 9 short rows = 7 short rows + 70
1 short row --> 35
1 long row --> 45

Pupils in rows --> 7 x 45 + 12 x35 = 735

You can use MD or form equations to solve the problem.

For MD, you will be able to see that,

4C + 3B = 65 or
(1C) + 3C + 3B = 65

Now, remove 1C and add (1B + $4 left), so

1C = 1B + $4

Then

4B + 16 + 3B = 65
7B = 49
B =$7
