Hello! I’m exploring whether I can offer lower-cost small-group tuition for upper-secondary and JC/IB students in Singapore, and would appreciate some input from students and parents. For the past three years, I’ve taught individual lessons through charities and family organisations. One difficulty I’ve encountered is that students sometimes receive support very late in the year, only 4–8 weeks before major exams. With limited funding available, help is often prioritised for students who have failed their mid-year exams or prelims. By then, there’s very little time to properly rebuild foundations before the major exams. I’ve also had parents approach me because they struggle to afford tuition but don’t qualify for assistance. Some are just above household-income eligibility thresholds, others have children whose grades are above the cut-off for support but are still struggling in school. I’d like to see whether small-group lessons could make earlier, consistent support more affordable. Sharing teaching and venue costs across a group could help keep fees manageable while covering teaching time, materials and operating expenses. Depending on demand, I may bring in peers to offer more subjects. I’m also hoping to offer optional enrichment pop-ups for enrolled students, roughly once a month if possible. These could include chess and game analysis, research literacy, university subject tasters, and introductory humanities/social-science research workshops. They’d be free where possible, or around S$5–15 per session if there’s any additional material costs. Nothing is confirmed yet.
