All About Teaching Values

In the past, I was taught authoritatively what is right and what is wrong. The shows I used to watch almost always had a good guy and a bad guy. And the good guy would always wins - the demarcation was clear and straight forward. Movies I used to watch would always make me cry over violence and celebrate virtues like diligence and perserverance. Violence content in media was frowned upon harshly then by the community. Now the movies my child watches celebrated violence and made a mockery out of hardworking guys as uncool nerds.

Our education system has all along reward the competitiveness to excel. However, the community on the whole I believe was largely still promoting the courage to exhibit selflessness during the time when I was growing up. Things seem simpler then. Societal support on values was extremely high. My parents will use gambling dens crack down as life story to teach me the cons of gambling. Now I have to explain to my son why gambling is BAD but we need and want that kind of the money by building more than one casinos here for the GOOD of Singapore.

While family is the most critical influence of one’s attitude towards values, there are also other influences too. The kind of gracious society we are in or the kind of role models (a teacher, a colleague or a friend) we have play a part too. I know of someone who grew up with a compulsive gambler mother. He grew up to be a fine adult, because he got good role models and strong societal support throughout his life. While I see my parents demonstrating a lot of good values, I actually have found quite a large portion of them missing in me.

While a child can pick up values from the parent, values can be also taught. While family fundamentally is the most critical influence on a person’s values, the community and system we are in play a big part too.

The more exposed to Chinese culture - it may have its own merits but you know of the case recently in the newspaper about the child porn.
When they go to Western society, they are a misfit and don't know how to adjust with other people.Better expose our kids to all cultures and people- we are moving towards a global economy.

The case about child porn is because the MOE scholar knows nothing about these Chinese core values, like a sense of shame, that is why he committed the crime.

This has nothing to do with the fact that he has not been exposed to other cutures. In fact, I think he is overly exposed to Western culture which is much more liberal, and that is not a good thing. He really brings shame not only to Singaporeans, but to Asians as a whole.

Do you actually think that he downloaded child porn because he did not know how to adjust to other people ? Please note that he was publicly caned when in Hwa Chong for peeping a girl's toilet. He was already a pervert and exposure to western culture is not going to help him.

Yes I think it is very important to teach our child the right values in life. To date I'm still trying through \"trial and error\" to see which method works. :?

Hi parents here, I am also thinking hard on what are some of the values to teach my children when I came across a series of DVDs in the library. There are books as well. The author is Carls Sommer. The values taught inside are really good! He uses very interesting stories to teach children a lot of values. For example, there is this story called "If I were…" It is talking about a mouse who dislikes herself very much. She does not like the look of herself and does not like to be chased by a cat, so she said, how i wish i can be a cat so that I wont be chased anymore. But when she really becomes a cat, she found that she cats are chased by dogs! So she wished to change to become a tiger, but when she becomes a tiger she was being bullied by an elephant, then she changed to be an elephant but was being caught to a circus… You can borrow the DVD to find out the ending… basically, the moral of the story is everyone has problems… So dont keep envying other people… Be happy being yourself…


There are many other stories that I find very useful and when I watched with my kids, I also learnt something…
