Why in the first place does the rich (referring to those who can afford the fees easily) applied for scholarships if they can well afford it? Just so as to tell people that they are excellent enough to get it? I am of the opinion that scholarships are to help people who has difficulties to continue further studies when they have excellent performance. I am sure there are already different awards in place to recognize that excellency.
I do agree with you, but in the same context, does it mean we should be banning well-to-do families from scholarships? That doesn't seem right either.

On an entirely different topic, for schools like ACSI where there are two streams (IB/O level) for DSA, can the school override the student’s preference ultimately when offering the CO?

eg, if child has preference for IB when submitting for DSA, does this mean that the school will only consider you for this stream, and what does it depend on?

Or perhaps is the DSA offered a generic one and the actual stream (IB/O level) is dependent on PSLE result?

This qn is best asked at their Open House.

In previous years, some forummers did mention that if the CO was for O level stream, and PSLE result turns out to meet the IB COP, then u can go appeal for the seat to be upgraded IB. But no officially published word on this as far as I know.

Thank you so much! I'll ask this Saturday then. Since last years DSA results were apparently very late due to Covid, what is the normal time frame for DSA CO's to be offered if they are lucky enough to be offered?

I believe the CO/WLs come in the midst of prelims, some maybe even after prelims (with interviews/auditons happening in the midst of prelims?)…but in any case, it doesnt really matter, as the deadline to submit the preference/acceptance form is always *after* the kids sit for the PSLE.

If your kid apply for IB & assuming that he does get short-listed for an Interview, after the entire interview process is over, two possible scenario can take place :-

                  1) if the panel of interviewers deem that your son is suitable for IB, they will offer him IB, either offer him IB (CO or Waitlist).

If is IB (CO), and if that's what your son truly wants, Congratulations ! Remember, key thing is what your son wants, because he is the one going to study IB, for the next 6 years. Not what u (parent) wants. The drive, the motivation / desire to want to pursue IB must come from he himself. Just in case your son may prefer A-level, instead of IB.

Otherwise, if parents force their child into IB and this is not what the child wants, along the way, within the next 6 years, should any challenges were to arise, the parent-child relationship can break down.

But if is IB (Waitlist), then is only a 50-50% conversion success rate, depending on where he is inside the Waitlist, ie. is he ranked high or ranked low inside the Wait-list and dependent upon the Total number of COs being rejected. For Wait-list students, in the unfortunate event case not converted, still need to fall back upon PSLE AL score to enter other Secondary schools, through S1 posting admission exercise.

                  2) after the interview is over, for whatever reasons,
if the panel of interviews feel that your son is not so suitable for IB after all, even though he did apply for IB, but the school
still want him, then they may counter offer him O-level track instead of IB, either O-level (CO or Waitlist )

And two years later, at the end of Sec 2,
if your son in O-level track is interested, wish to re-consider IB again, still can join Sec 3 (IB). You may approach the school Principal, ask what are the necessary criteria fulfillment, to cross platform from O level into IB, at end of Sec 2

This is exactly what I needed- TYSM! And the advice for IB is also very much en pointe. My DD in SOTA so we are well aware of IB pros and cons. And IB would definitely be his choice given his strengths.

My other question is whether it’s common or recommended for people to ask their current school teachers for letters of support during application process?

It is no longer common or recommended ever since MOE started their centralised DSA portal.

I suppose there is no harm asking the teachers for one, but there is simply no avenue to upload or submit such letters.

Given that the interviews are likely to be still in Zoom format inside the primary schools, the kids can’t even bring the physical letters to pass around the interview panel either.
