Think several domain interviews are ongoing now. Yesterday DD’s group interview had netball, squash and basketball. And she mentioned another group has EL too.

My girl is in Hci J2 now. She’s doing all the Sch prelim papers now. Not sure if it matters but she commented RI prelim papers are easy while NYJC is as hard as HCI. It is known NYJC is a mugger school as well.
Thanks for the info. I’m actually surprised that there’s quite a no. commented RI papers are easier and NYJC is always having tests… actually both me and hub prefer RI, but eventually is her choice. Just want to give her as much info as possible and not regret her decision.

                  1)
Are you going to send your daughter overseas for further study, after her A-level ?

If Yes, then choose RI better if you intend to apply for DSA (Sec 4), because RI has a strong connection network to tap upon, better resources, in a better position to help to connect your daughter with popular overseas universities, and their teaching professors.

RI not only have got very strong alumni ties, but their Senior teaching staff are also very well connected to other reknown Professors, in other Western countries.

                  2) how does your daughter handle competition from her peers, so far ?

Both ( Nanyang JC and RI ) are competitive. But, I think for the last two final exit point A-level years, where students are \"fighting\" for scholarship openings, I would think that RI students comprising very vocal (RI boys + RGS girls inside) are much more competitive, than Nanyang JC students. Have you studied in RGS, before ?
If one has ever studied in RGS before, one would know how competitive RGS is. But, if you never studied in RGS before, u may not know.

When students enter RGS in Sec 1, because everyone just fresh from the oven, right after their PSLE, Sec 1 (RGS) is still a honeymoon year, where many girls are still trying to have a feel, of what IP entails. So, perhaps, competition haven't seeped in yet, because they are still in Lower Secondary. But, as time passes, as one go higher & higher up the level, into Upper Sec, the competition amongst RGS girls themselves, become very strife. Even in Cca, sometimes, u already can feel the heat, just \"fighting\" for Leadership positions, itself. There were even cases in the past, whereby 2 mothers come to \"fight\" & argue (quarrel) openly, right in front of their daughters' Cca Teacher in charge and other students around, \"demand\" to put the other opponent down, as to why their rival (opponent) is deemed not good enough for the Cca leadership position, trying to \"explain\" to the Cca Tr on charge, why her own daughter is definitely more worthy, more deem and more fit, to be selected (elected) for the Leadership position, in that Cca. Yes, don't be shocked, that in certain Cca, even the mothers themselves are involved, go down to RGS premises, trying to fight for their own daughters how to \"clinche\" that coveted, \"glorifying\" Leadership Cca position. Yes, a lot of RGS are smarties, very vocal. They are goal getters. Btw, some of their moms are also (former) ex-RGS graduates, too.
So, not only are their daughters vocal, their moms too.

                  Also,
                  don't forget that
the last cert (RI boys + RGS girls) held in their palm, was only a PSLE cert, because they have by-passed O-level exam. Naturally, they will \" fight \" very hard to excel in their A-level, knowing that is their final exit point.

                  As a mom (parent),
how well do u feel that your daughter is able to handle this type of stress, coming from \"cut throat\" competition fellow classmates / school-mates ?
This is a question, only your daughter can answer herself.

                  3) in (RI & RGS),
the students have been trained from year (1 to 4), to self study & to read up topics fast in advance, on their own, before their teacher even started teaching the topic. And when RI teach, the teachers will teach at fast pace, because the majority are IP students. JAE are the minority, not the majority. RI will assume that somehow, if these JAE students can enter RI at nett ( 3 or 4 points ) in L1R5, these JAE students would have no problem, trying to catch up. They will also assume that if student don't understand anything, your daughter will be independent enough, have the initiative to make arrangement on her own, to consult the respective class subject teachers, for follow up. No one is going to spoon feed you, topic by topic, chapter by chapter as before, like in the O-level track curriculum.

                  How well,
do you feel, is your daughter coming from the O-level track, trained to be on par with these IP students, the way they study or do revision?

No doubt your girl try to DSA by Sports, but still, at the end of the day, universities are going to look at your A-level results, not look at your Sports results, no matter how well she excel in Sports, when she apply for a university spot in the faculty, based on her A-level results' score points .

May I suggest to look beyond uni and go further, when making education decisions. After uni it’s not the end , the child still has a very long way to go in life.

Take for example why PSC conduct interviews and not only rely on academic result when awarding scholarships? It is to establish applicants’ character among many things, whether fit public service. And in the working world/with friends/family, a person that know when to compete/cooperate/compromise (look at what is happening around the world now) is wiser than one that only compete ( wouldn’t be pleasant if the child is competitive with siblings/parents too) . To me, these are values, often acquired during formative years of the child in schools.

Agree that the values are important. But also true that some schools simply have better resources and network and are therefore able to develop their students.

Not only JC but even at primary level. Some schools exposes their students to more competition and training. Help to build their portfolio for dsa and scholarship at a later stage. One of the reasons why some parents work hard to send their children to better primary schools.

Hi All, would like to have some advise if given a choice for RI & NYJC, thru DSA for basketball, which one will be a better choice? how's their culture? Which one is more stressful? My gal is currently studying in AHS, so we thou maybe NYJC will be a better choice for her as culture is similar, but i heard they have a lot of tests going on every now and then. RI seems good but afraid my gal cannot blend in. Thank you in advance...
I think schools are now more careful/mindful in awarding Sports COs. If your child has received CO from both schools, very likely the schools have assessed your child to be a good fit (including the academic aspect) for the schools.

So now it boils down to which school your child prefers. I am sure she has 1st choice and 2nd choice in her mind. In the event, if my child’s first choice is NYJC and parents here prefer that she picks RI, I will try to persuade her to go RI. But in the event she still decides to pick NYJC, I will respect her choice because at the age of 16yo, she is mature enough to make a decision.
