Would like to ask for opinions from experienced parents regarding uni course choice.

If child has no specific talent or interest but open to finance or career in financial industry, which course is more suitable? Is it finance, accounting (which one of the 3 uni is recommended/preferred, if should take 2nd major like data analytics), economics or a mix of the above (double degree kind)?

Is finance course in uni the same as business course? We see that studying finance in NUS leads to BBA degree, in NTU Bachelor of Business, and Bachelor of Business Mgmt in SMU (pls correct me if I’m wrong).
Anyone know has personal experience/know someone from those programmes and what do you think about the quality & employability? Are BBA from NUS is highly regarded in the financial industry?

Is accounting still a viable course to take, considering the vast advancement of AI? Pardon my ignorance, both parents are not from the industry thus not much knowledge about this. Many thanks in advance!

        Hi
My kids are fast approaching the end of the sec/jc journey and they are clueless about what uni courses to take (am sure there are many teenagers like this too). For ksp parents here who are very experienced and been through the same path, do you mind sharing the uni courses/which uni your kids have pursued and the thoughts process behind them. Appreciate kind sharing from parents thank you.
I think kids at this stage would mostly want to take charge.
All along, dd studied Science subjects and it has been a torture for her bec mum ie me insisted on.

When she entered U, i totally hands-free. I told her that she is mature enough to decide for her future. She choose FASS :yikes:

She thrives and has been enjoying her U life esp during the 1st 2 years before covid came. She stayed in Tembusu College. She studied hard and played hard.

As parents, we are relieved πŸ™‚

Tembusu College is a great college - a lot of college spirit. Kinda β€˜artsy’ though. Did she manage to catch talks by rector Prof Tommy Koh?

I would say, you are an enlightened parent who is willling to support your child to experience residential college life at NUS. Many Singaporean parents balk at the costs of hostel life and are not supportive of their kids experiencing it, as commuting is usually not too inconvenient for most Singaporeans.

The wonderful thing about College of Humanities and Sciences is that you now no longer need to choose between FASS and FOS - you can enter the College, and choose to combine majors / second majors / major-minor from across what FASS and FOS offers.

What you wrote about studying Science subjects so resonates with me. I didn't insist, but I did tell my kids it would be useful to take triple science in upper sec so that you know which sciences to pick for JC. They both did. And now, none is keen to study Science in JC wahahahahahahah!

FASS which course? I think most FASS courses have no specialisations except in econs and political sci on year 1 right? Which means someone can actually do badly in year 1 and end up in a less than desirable fass specialisation in year 2 onwards?

How much does it cost to stay inside NUS or NTU hostel nowadays ?

Do they charge hostel fees, by per Term or per Year basis ?

                  Hi Imp75,

There is no limit to the number of FASS (more accurately, College of Humanities and Sciences) students who can read Economics or Political Science as their major now. Just like any other majors, you just need to pass the modules to take the next level modules etc. Any and every FASS/CHS student can opt to major in Economics.

Best to refer to the NUS website as there is a huge range of room types and hostel types. For halls and colleges, please remember to factor in the meal plans.
                    https://nus.edu.sg/osa/student-services/hostel-admission/undergraduate/hostel-meal-plan-rates

It's best to check with NUS but I am pretty sure the hostel fees are charged per semester basis (and not per yeear) because NUS has students on exchange programmes, both inbound and outbound, every semester.

Ask your kids what kind of jobs he/she want to do after study?

One of my niece is good at playing piano and she went to the United Kingdom to study Music and become a professional piano teacher now. My three nephew, one was studying accounting and is now working in Price Waterhouse and one is still studying architecture and the other is an insurance agent as he studied business administration. My step son went to the SIM University for Electrical Engineering and he is working as an Electrical Engineer.

Yes, she enjoyed it. There were some dogs' show whereby some special tamed dogs came with their owners to allow students to pat them

Initially dd wanted to go overseas to study 😞 I told her $$ not enough and she has to settle with Tembusu College.

With more flexibilities, there are more combinations, choices and hence more headache.
