Hi Hi, last year, my DD1’s 1st choice was to do Biz but realized she is more of an introvert and doesn’t enjoy meeting different people everyday. Therefore, we decided on Econs. She can just do her analysis job if she really wants to. DD1 prefers Econs also because Biz is a general degree. I have a younger JC2 daughter who is currently looking at Biz. How old is your kid?

Accountacy also ok/suitable but she ruled it out because the remuneration does not commensurate with the long hours spent at work. Will AI replace accounting jobs? We think it’s just a matter of time because it’s already starting to happen in US.
      Hi Leeyl,
Mine is jc2 too! This yr mug for A lvl then it’s decision time next yr. Wow your dd is very driven & connected with seniors, she’ll do well in the future.

Re: actuarial science, read that NUS had stopped the intake for this course and only ntu and smu offer this. Any idea why, is it because it’s very niche and thus not enough demand to absorb all the graduates into the insurance industry?

Moves to improve the accountancy sector and groom accountants:
      https://www.mof.gov.sg/news-publications/press-releases/shaping-singapore-s-accountancy-workforce-for-tomorrow

\"Finance\" is a huge area, and involves a lot more different types of jobs than just those that \"touch\" the money. The ones who are in the more technical fields would need to be highly numerate or with IT skills. Then there are the marketing and sales types who go out and get clients, and encourage them to invest/deposit etc. There are those who look to the future and try to see trends. There are the backroom ones who deal with the accounting, audit, record-keeping, cybersecurity, anti-money-laundering, and every institution needs HR, PR etc. Of course, not every job gets the same amount of limelight and pay.

      Takes all kinds.
Thanks for the balanced views, Slmkhoo. Yes we are kind of aware of the many kinds of jobs in finance. Seems sales, HR & PR are not of child’s interest.

Yes, confirm primary major will be Econs. My suggestion to her is to do Econs paired with finance, pick something evergreen!! Oh ya, my DH likes actuarial science too!
Hi Leeyl, may i know why econs and not business? Does it have a wider choice of career prospects compared to biz? So it’s under Arts & Social Science dept right.

Thank you for all the sharing!

We just thought that personal finance/investing is a necessary life skill for everyone esp now with high inflation, disruption in many jobs, just working & saving is not enough. So might as well learn abt it in uni as a course n hopefully lead to a fulfilling career (if there’s such a thing in finance industry, or is it just stress, stress & stress?)
Not aiming to be the top, but maybe (if possible) mgmt trainee in local financial institutions. What are the profiles for tjose selected, is it only for super on/hardworking competitive kind with mutiple internships in ‘high finance’ like morgan stanley etc?
Heard abt quant, seems like must be really strong in math & hv interest programming. Is there any specialization at undergrad level or only for post grad level?

Would like to ask for opinions from experienced parents regarding uni course choice.

If child has no specific talent or interest but open to finance or career in financial industry, which course is more suitable? Is it finance, accounting (which one of the 3 uni is recommended/preferred, if should take 2nd major like data analytics), economics or a mix of the above (double degree kind)?

Is finance course in uni the same as business course? We see that studying finance in NUS leads to BBA degree, in NTU Bachelor of Business, and Bachelor of Business Mgmt in SMU (pls correct me if I’m wrong).
Anyone know has personal experience/know someone from those programmes and what do you think about the quality & employability? Are BBA from NUS is highly regarded in the financial industry?

Is accounting still a viable course to take, considering the vast advancement of AI? Pardon my ignorance, both parents are not from the industry thus not much knowledge about this. Many thanks in advance!

    • RE: Where provides good GP tuition

Reviving this old thread. Any personal recommendation from parents for good GP tuition other than Indigo, near Bishan/Marymount area? Seems Indigo is really popular but quite ex and quite a distance for us.

Anyone know if Zenith is good for GP?
Stumbled upon gp.sg, anyone has engaged their GP tuition? Lesson is online only, wonder how effective this is. Appreciate any sharing. TIA.

    • RE: All About Dental

Hi, my 16 yo is advised to have braces. Problem incl overcrowding & gap in front teeth. Dentist recommended Dr Poon from Twin City at Ngee Ann City. Was told that the cost will be $1.5k for braces, but every month will have to go for tightening and cost $200/mo for about 2 years. Wondering if the fee is considered high or the norm? Any suggestion for affordable but good Orthodontist for teen braces? Thanks!
