I have given this some thoughts. I think the confinement practices make a difference if one is in a weaker state after birth or gets older. I did not do confinement for both births and was back on my feet the very next day. It was ok for the first one. But for the second one, I had mild PPH. I think I would have benefitted from taking more herbs and confinement food. It took me a few years to recover and I learned to shower only during the day because I would fall sick if I shower at night, among other things. And I am in tropical Singapore!
same for me too... no confinement lady, bathed everyday, stayed in aircon room, catered confinement food, did housework and bathed all babies by myself. my mum told me \"next time u old liao then u know...\"
i asked her if she got aches here and there now, she said \"yes, old liao sure have..\"
told her, precisely my point... last time u gave birth u followed everything old ppl say u still get aches here and there. so, nothing to do with following confinement practices or not.
she gave me peace thereafter. :imanangel:
I concluded that confinement practices started as a way to help reduce mortality rate after birth in china, especially in the colder months in China. Imagine having to shower with cold well water. Or be on a meager diet. Even for our grandmothers who lived in poverty, the traditional confinement practices has a protective effect since others will have to boil the well water for them, afford them bed rest (otherwise it is farm chores and other hard work) which may also protect them from prolapse, and give them adequate nourishment.
So I believe there is a proper context for it.
Of course now that we have electric water heater, washing machines, and going out and about s more likely shopping centers or cinemas than doing farm chores, not to mention surplus of food, the practices will appear to have lost their relevance. -

My ME time: watched Bean movie at ch 5. Though I have watched this many times, I still have a good laugh and felt good.

Confinement after my 2nd kid was really great…it sure boosted my health.
Ate and ate the first 2 weeks…also drank lots of chicken soup.
But the washing of hair and bathing still as per normal.
Except that I bathed in later part of the morning and around 5pm. -
ME time tomorrow!
