All About Kids' Eye-sight

Sigh… my P3 son is now wearing glasses… result of poor lighting and bad habits of placing his face too near his book while writing.
I think it’s my fault for not getting him a desk lamp and high enough chair at his table… sigh. -
Hmm...he is wearing glasses now? There goes the dream of him becoming a fighter pilot. :?

My kid just went for the 4 years old medical assessment and the doctor said that one of his eye is abit weak, need to check back 6 months time. Oh boy, wonder what causes this. He doesn’t watch alot of TVs. Anyone know of ways to improve the vision?

Check the lighting around the area he frequents or reads his books. Make sure you put a table lamp near it. I just got one of those invertor lights which I installed at my son's desk. I had thought that the 4 bright bulbs in his ceiling fan were sufficient - until I turned on the desk light. The difference was literally night and day. That is the reason why I regretted not having done it earlier. -

I have those polarized lamp from 3M, but use it only when he is doing school work. Probably the room where he watch TV is a bit dim. Thanks for the advise, I will see about the lighting.phantom:

Thinking of getting those inverter lights too…but they are not cheap. Any one to recommend?

There's some science behind those things, as I've found out during my shopping. There are 2 main types:
1. Filter-based. These are mostly offered by 3M, and is essentially a polarization filter which covers the bare light. You can use any flourescent light. Prices start above $170 in Best Denki. Also offered by Popular bookstores.
2. Circuit-based. AKA. Invertor lights. I bought the bracket-type http://www.viclite.com/desklamp03.htm at Courts for around S$145. I was told you need to use specific lamps for it. No filter. -
Filter based? Hmm…sounds like a con job to me. If can just filter, wear sun glasses can already.
the main problem with artificial light, is the frequency of the light pulses. While it may look constant to you, flourescent lights actually strobe or pulses at about 120hz. This is what cause people’s eyesight to go bad. Just like watching tv on those old style crt models. TV refreshes at 50hz/60hz per second, ie flickers.
I think should go for the circuit base ones. They are aka e-ballest. (for electronic ballest). These generate lights at a much higher frequency of 20Khz. So the flicker effect is actually not noticable. -

Yes, yes... that's why I went for the inverter type. Apparently, the polarizing filter reduces glare to make it easier to read... check out these which are http://www.3mofficestationery.com/ergonomics_detail.php?cid=51.Filter based? Anyone knows how to get an eye exam for a kid? Like do we walk into an optician and ask for one? Any good recommendations?
Tks!
