Apple unveils iPhone 4

verykiasu2010:
for 2 and half weeks, my data usage has been 51MB or 0.051GB...30GB is a lot of data
I am going for Singtel 30GB dataplan. Is that good enough???MMM:
plus a whole host of applications designed for iphone, very convenient to use...air ticket bookings, hotel bookings, map & direction
data plan for local singapore use is quite sufficient, and with the wifi mode is always on, you can select to turn of data roaming so that you won't accidentally use data roaming on overseas (no shock bills),,,and in overseas, there are also many free wifi that you can use...eg hotels ... once you logged in once, and when you are back to the same spot, the iphone will automatically log on to the free wifi again...very convenient and save cost ....currently i am overseas and am enjoying the convenience of it
previously i also think changing to iphone is a waste of money...now i am a convert
How does the free wifi works???? Really cheem for me. Say we go to mcdonalds, it will auto detect and the roaming don't eat into ourplan :? Does that apply overseas as well??? Does that mean we've to turn off auto roam and just use wifi to detect?
Sorry... I am very lost.
ok i signed up for unlimited data (local, i.e. Singapore only), reason being if i signed up for the standard 12GB data plan, plus monthly subscription etc....it comes out to approx $86, plus equipment cost S$ a few hundred -- amortise it into 24 mth contract....my monthly cost is about S$100, with the upfront equipment cost of a few hundredS$ as just mentioned
over at the unlimited data plan, I pay S$98 per month, inclusive of the monthly subscription, plus 700 minutes outgoing....and the phone is free !! so i can use it freely in S'pore without worrying on data over use, and if i make overseas calls, it will deduct from my 700 minutes free outgoing first, i save also on overseas trunk call (using 021) (singtel's 013 IDD is not free)...so i rather pay monthy S$98 for 24 months with 700 minutes free outgoing, than to pay S$85 (approx) per month, plus an upfront equipment cost
actually 12GB data is quite a lot unless you download lots of movies .......
ABOUT FREE WIFI
I believe most people at home are using wifi. so, set it up the same way in the iphone, key in your wifi security key ...and the phone will automatically detect and use wifi at home instead of using the data usage in the package. eg, while watching tv, you can download email on the iphone via wifi without incurring usage on the data plan. you can check that the data counter does not show any movement even though you may have done lots of downloading.....to be sure for your own assurance, test it out by switching it to flight mode, meaning no mobile connection, and yet you can download email and surf internet on the iphone, that is proves that you are using the wifi on your iphone. also, when you are on local data usage, your surfing time does not eat into your 700 minutes of free outgoing
now, local data usage is when you are in SG using the mobile network.
there is a function for you to turn off DATA ROAMING so that when you are overseas, you do not accidentally use the overseas network for data / surfing. This is NOT the same as the international auto roaming on your voice call - which you need and you can't turn if off anyway as it is controlled by the mobile service provider once you signed up for the (voice call) roaming service
FREE WIFI out of the house / or overseas
there are free wifi hot spots like SGwireless or something like that in S'pore. If, for eg, MacDonald provides free wifi, and when you are there you can surf internet and once you activate email or safari, straight away it will prompt you to connect to wifi network in the range, so you select that which is free; some wifi network are security controlled, so you won't be able to log on unless you have the wifi key, some don't need, anyone can log on
same as for overseas, like the hotel i am in now, it is free, just click accept,....and just log on, and yesterday i was at restaurant next to the Hilton ...and Hilton has free wifi...i was able to log on and use it though i am outside Hilton....
sorry for the clumsy explanation
:thankyou: It's clear. :salute:
I am getting a corporate plan for data and less than $10 for 30gb. The phone is free. Some said it's more than enough while some said it's not enough. I suppose this depends on usage. Will monitor and revise along the way...
Ok... my current impression of iphone is just like a laptop. Can use wifi to download internet stuff for free but it's on the phone. Oops... I think I sound really hopeless and a laggard in this area. -

Heehee....I'm also still learning

I told hubby I will wait a while b4 getting the iphone 4...but like what daisyt mentioned about not changing to any other brands, I agree with her. I used to be a Nokia fan but now that I'm using the 3GS, it's hard to switch back to Nokia again.
I'm hopeless with the 3GS too, mainly using it for sms/checking emails/playing some games and of course using it as a phone. Using iphone to surf Net is painful
That's why I don't sign up for data plan.
As for Face Time, the other party has to carry an iphone 4 and be in an area with wifi.
I use iphone for dictionary and assess Facebook once a while. -
I used my iPhone4 to read Manga! I love my new toy

Someone mentioned his iphone 4 has this icon at the top right which drained out battery fast. BTW, how is your iphone 4 battery ? I love my Bubblepop game. It's a nice game. -

LKVM,
Yup, impossible for 3GS. Mine drops to just 1/4 if I play games on it for short while…usually charge in the morning and there was once it completely knocked out as I played with it as I couldn’t sleep. -
MMM:
Just one note. If you are not in wifi zone, you can turn off the wifi detection (go to settings) - else eat up battery juice as the phone is trying to find a wifi network to connect to.
