Hi parents. My DD who completed her PSLE this year is getting restless and bored at home, and school holiday has barely started! She has asked for assessment books to do to kill time.. any recommendations on Sec One assessment books, that can be used for self study and practises? We are likely going for IP program next year (fingers crossed on PSLE result this week).

Or any recommended resources online that can keep her occupied meaningfully?

      Thank you
      PM you.

Please don't get assessment books! Time enough to do \"school\" stuff when school starts. There are much more interesting, and mind-broadening things to do! Kids who only know how to do \"school\" stuff can get quite narrow. As they grow up, this kind of narrowness will be a disadvantage.

I posted this earlier in the year, for kids to do during the school holidays (this was during Phase 1, so there are more opportunities to move around and meet up now):

You can try out some of the ideas below. Some won't interest them at all, and that's OK. Some will interest them enough that they can do them over several days or even weeks. Just pick a couple for each day.

        Some ideas:
        - Reading. You can probably sign up to borrow ebooks online, or borrow from libraries open again. Look for recommended reading lists (lots of them online if you google) for their age groups or interests.

        - Writing. You could ask them to write poems, stories, journal, comics, etc. There are lots of writing prompts and ideas online if you google. They could write a script with friends (over video call), and make puppets so they can act them out to each other.

        - Crafts. Besides the obvious drawing/painting on paper, etc, what about digital art? Or sewing or photography? Or making a digital scrapbook or photobook? They could make something digital to send to their grandparents or cousins.

        - Cooking . Initially, you probably need to get them to just plan independently, but only actually cook when you are free to supervise. When they gain competence, you could let them do more unsupervised.

        - Nature/science. They can't go out much, but they can go out a little bit nearby. They can do a project on the plants they find, or the birds/insects they see. Get them to take photos, then research online, and write something. Look up \"kitchen table\" experiments that kids can do with common household items. Get them to research natural phenomenon. My kids were used to my telling them \"why don't you find out more?\".

        - Logic/maths/word puzzles, brain teasers. You can google for these too. They could design their own puzzles and share with friends.

        - Music. Play an instrument they already have at home. Learn some new songs. Write a song.

        - Exercise/movement. Find some online videos that they can exercise or dance to.

        - Online games with friends. My kids tell me that there are quite a lot of games to play over video calls these days. Set up \"play dates\" with other kids, but set clear time limits and rules first.

        - Virtual \"trips\". There are quite a lot of videos about different places, museums etc. Or just pick a random city, and ask them to find out 5 interesting things about it, and have a show and tell session.

        - Projects that combine several of the above. For eg., my daughter did a Lord of the Rings type project (medieval history, knights etc) when she was around that age. She read the books, designed a coat of arms, collected info about their castles, weapons, clothing, musical instruments, etc. I think we tried to make some cake or food (can't remember now as it's nearly 10 yrs ago).

That should be enough to start with!

Can she type with 10 fingers yet? If not, she can learn how to type with 10 fingers (just search internet for guides and practices). It is useful because there are a lot of reports to write in IP.

I strongly recommend this too! When my kids were around 10-11 yrs old, I bought a training course called \"Mavis Beacon\" on CD-ROM (yes, it was THAT long ago) and they learned to type pretty well. There is a free course now available online:
              http://www.mavisbeaconfree.com/

I don't know how the current one is, but it can be a bit boring (there are some games, but essentially, there is a lot of practising), so I only asked them to put in 10 mins each time, 3 times a week. It only took them a few months to reach about 35 wpm.

Here is another one. My P6 son was given an account from his school after PSLE so they could start practising. There is a free version that can be used as well. No idea which one of these websites is best.

Can I check if any parents have feedback or recommendations of any tutors/tuition centre for students in IP? As understand, IP in each school may be different in terms of how they cover the syllabus, do parents, therefore, go for 1-1 tuition instead? I am not able to find any parent's sharing on tutors/tuition centres specific for IP. Perhaps I might have missed them. I would very much appreciate if someone can share the link if there is already one. Thanks.

I think less in lower secondary. Maybe becks overall, lower sec still manageable. Also, from my understanding, secondary schools encourage students to book consultation hours (outside school hours) with individual teachers if they have any questions. Sometimes these sessions are 1-1 but other times, the teacher might group a few students with similar problems into one small group. My DD finds such consultation hours very useful.

But if you are looking for tuition help in Maths, I highly recommend Future Academy.

                        Hmmm...
Am I correct to make the following inferences:
                        1. Around 700 drop out of the programme per batch - either to O Level, or polytechnic, or out of school, or somewhere else.
                        2. Around 165 per batch can’t make it pass the basic requirement for local universities (less renown overseas universities should be ok).
